Analysis: Biden slashes funds for schools with hunting programs

To pundits who live in their coastal bubble, this means very little. Therein lies the problem with out-of-touch progressives and career politicians making consequential choices for the rest of America.

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, passed last year after a series of mass shootings, laid the foundation for the Education Department to choke elementary and secondary school funding if archery or hunting programs are offered to their students.

The administration is defending this wild overreach by stating that it's based on their interpretation of the act and that blocking funds earmarked under the Elementary Secondary Education Act of 1965 is permissible.

The new law passed in Congress last year with support from both Republicans and Democrats, but it’s clear that the legislation is being misused to further a progressive elite’s vision of safety, inclusion, and elimination of Second Amendment rights. When the law was signed, it included an amendment to the 1965 statute which prohibited funds from being provided to anyone with training in the use of a dangerous weapon.

Although Republican lawmakers and the Biden administration know full well that this change in wording was expressly included to withhold funds from the training of school resource officers, which also happens to be concerning, the White House is now leveraging its power to get rid of anything even remotely close to gun rights. In doing so, they are intentionally causing harm to millions of children and trampling upon their broader communities.

Consider, for instance, the National Archery in the Schools program. It’s estimated that since its inception two decades ago in Kentucky, the initiative has introduced archery to millions of students between fourth and twelfth grade, while thousands of educators have been taught archery skills as well.

Of course, to pundits who live in their coastal bubble, this means very little. Therein lies the problem with out-of-touch progressives and career politicians making consequential choices for the rest of America, even when they do not understand how much of America lives.

Hunting, archery, bow skills, and general outdoorsmanship have been longstanding traditions in many parts of the United States and serve as the means to communal relationships among children and adults alike. These activities foster friendships between peers in a day and age when many children have become addicted to screens and isolation.

School programs that push children outdoors and teach them meaningful skills like hunting and fishing are swiftly vanishing from schools, especially among liberal communities that prefer to fill classroom hours with STEM and ESL. And while many anti-hunting activists would scoff at the idea that these programs are essential, students who participated in the National Archery in the Schools initiative were 40% more engaged in the classroom. Over 90% of them also desired to look for more outdoor opportunities.

The idea of children being taught to responsibly use a bow, arrow, or hunting rifle would be completely anathema to most progressives sitting in their California or Northeastern bungalows and brownstones, but to Americans in the South and Midwest, it’s a way of life that has endured for over two centuries.

Tommy Floyd, the president of National Archery in the Schools, echoed in a recent interview the thoughts of many Republican lawmakers who are already protesting this move from the Biden administration: “It's a negative for children. As a former educator of thirty-plus years, I was always trying to find a way to engage students. In many communities, it's a shooting sport, and the skills from shooting sports that help young people grow to be responsible adults. They also benefit from relationships with role models.”

This move by the Biden administration is extremely misguided but should come as a shock to no one, especially in a moment where leftist opposition to the Second Amendment has reached a fever pitch. Progressive anti-gun legal action against recreational hunting and archery will come with detrimental consequences to the already suffering young people in our country, as well as the national traditions millions of people have enjoyed from generation to generation.

In a time when our heritage is already fraying and shared interests are at a premium, why is the Biden administration stealing away learning opportunities from kids? It’s all in service of an agenda. Anyone can see that.

In the Cook County Forest Preserve there were so many deer they were eating themselves out of house and home and were starving. So they opened a bow season to thin out the herds.
