Work stoppage at 'Big Three' carmakers would begin next month if no deal is reached Auto workers have voted overwhelmingly to give union leaders the authority to call strikes against the 'Big Three' Detroit car companies if a contract agreement isn't reached.
The United Auto Workers union said Friday that 97 percent of members voted in favor of authorizing one or more strikes against Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, the maker of Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep vehicles.
Contracts between the union representing nearly 150,000 workers and the three automakers expire at 11.59pm on September 14. A 10-day strike at all three companies would cost the US economy an estimated $5.6 billion.
'We're fed up with seeing Big Three profits break the bank, while we're breaking our backs,' UAW president Shawn Fain said in a fiery Facebook Live video announcing the vote tally.
