As long as the Pope doesn't shit in the woods then I'm jiggy with Acetone. I'll see what I can find this week. Do you have any sort of personal testimonial about its performance?
Acetone is fingernail polish remover. You don't want to put it in your car; it'll eat the hell out of everything it touches. You don't want the stuff to even TOUCH you. I've seen these articles before, and all of them are fraudulent.

I'm getting 25% more gase mileage. Women put this on their fingers. I don't touch the stuff, I dilute it 1.5 oz to 10 Gal gasoline.

So will gasoline, though. Try pouring some gasoline in a styrofoam cup, and come back in an hour or so: the cup will be dissolved. Feul system and engine parts are made of solvent resistant materials. Not recommending for or against using acetone in your gas, I know nothing about it. Just saying it probably wouldn't hurt the car. What about Xylene or MEK, I wonder? My first thought when I read the article was that it cleans your injectors and plugs. The linked page says it works by breaking down the viscosity of the gasoline, making it atomize better so it burns more completely. I wonder if it would help an old-style carburated engine(my van). Maybe I could get up to 12 mpg, instead of the usual 9.

I would never put any acetone in my tank -- and this is from a guy whose four- cylinder car has over 280,000 miles on the original transmission and engine, so I know a thing or two about cars. You'd be better off changing your air filter regularly and using platinum spark plugs.

They blew out one day on the highway. No telling if it was the acetone or not. He hasn't been able to get a straight answer from a mecanic on this because no one wants to pass on this unorthodox procedure. Liability worries, I assume. I went to a website that I don't have a link to anymore, and a lot of folks are really getting improved mileage with acetone. I'd do some careful research about the car that I'd be putting this additive in before I tried this.
Acetone WILL improve your gas mileage at first because it's cleaning all the gunk out of your engine. Many fuel injector cleaners have acetone in them. The stuff is okay if used temporarily. If you use it all the time, it WILL dissolve your gaskets, your o-rings, and anything else it touches in your engine or fuel system that's made of plastic or rubber. Then you are going to be VERY sorry. It will also dissolve the paint on your car if it touches it.

I don't know about rubber, but the stuff comes in plastic containers...maybe I'll put an O-ring in acetone and see how it goes.
Yea, got a gallon and ran the suggested quantities for about 8 or 9 tanks of gas IIRC and didn't really notice crap. The polarity is alleged to "loosen up" the hydrocarbon chains for more efficient combustion. Also, it's not any more of a solvent boogey man than any other VOC in gasoline, I put several types of o-rings in a jar filled with it for several days to see what the effect was on them and it wasn't jack (which is not to say all are good, I may have just serendipitously gotten unobtainium doped super o-rings). It does pass through skin like it's not there and is a tad hard on the liver over a long period of high exposure. To give you an idea of how easy it penetrates skin, I've known health and safety guys who demonstrate absorption risk by placing their fingers in a jar of acetone and simultaneously blowing into a PID (Photo Ionization Detector), it shows up on the meter right away...

No one mentioned anything about what comes out of the exhaust pipe when they would be burning acetone. Acetone is an extremely high carcigenic substance. Just read the label on fingernail polish remover and or famowood filler used by woodworkers. nuff said!!!!!

Acetone will destroy the lubricating properties of the motor oil. First clue will be when the engine seizes. I would try this with an old vehicle that is not worth much to see what happens.
...casting my vote *against* trying this. I wouldn't expect so little amount of an additive to so much gas to have that dramatic an impact on MPG. Ten gallons of gasoline weighs about 61 pounds, so doing the math with 1.5 ounces of acetone means the additive makes up a very tiny 0.15% of the fuel mixture. So if this mixture yields an average increase of 25% MPG, it certainly isn't because acetone is a fuel. The "loosening up" of hydrocarbons in the gas is an interesting theory (I've heard the same about clipping a strong magnet around your fuel line) but the cleaning properties explanation makes a lot more sense. So if you got better milage with it on your first try, I'd say go without it on your next two tank fulls and see if the good milage continues. If so, you got your answer. But I'd take a pass on putting acetone in gas based solely on claims found on the net. Acetone is nasty stuff, as pointed out.

My case was really pathetic. I not only Super-Glued my fingers together, I Super-Glued the insole in one shoe to my finger. Let's just say the tube burst.
