Cicada 'apocalypses' set for 16 US states - as more than one trillion insects from TWO groups will emerge for the first time in over 200 years... and our map shows which states will be impacted An annoying buzzing will be heard throughout 16 US states as two groups of cicadas are set to emerge. This will be the first time of such an event since Thomas Jefferson was president in 1803. The insects - known for the screaming noise they make - hibernate in either 13- or 17-year cycles, but a group from each will surface together this year. The infestation is set for 16 states that will likely see hundreds, if not thousands, of trees 'damaged beyond recovery,' a professor at Tennessee Tech University warned. Dr Gene Kritsky, a professor, entomologist and cicada expert at Mount St. Joseph University, told DailyMail.com: 'The dual emergence is a one in two or three lifetime event. The infestation is set for 16 states, with some states like Illinois and Indiana seeing both groups around the same time
