A new book reviewed by Clyde Wilson documents that in 1850 Lincoln sold the slaves that his wife inherited. It is scandalous that this fact has been ignored by the Lincoln cult all these years.

Robert E. Lee’s wife, Mary Custis Lee, a descendant of Mary Washington, also inherited slaves, and Lee freed them in accordance with his father- in-law’s will.

The election of Abe Lincoln to be President is what sparked the Civil War. He campaigned on the promise to end slavery.

And his Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 (which only freed slaves in rebellious states) was just more grist in the mill.

Lincoln chose Andrew Johnson, a Democrat, as his running mate in an attempt to mend fences with the south. ;)

Not really.

Lincoln and the Republican Party platform promised not to interfere with slavery in the states, but opposed slavery in the territories. The platform promised tariffs protecting industry and workers. It was the tariffs, more than slavery (remember the South won every battle about that)that caused the rebellion.

Notice that the South won every one of those 9 contests. Hadn't lost a slavery fight.

However, they had reason to fear they would lose on the tariff issue.
