Interesting but not a place where people could independently live as there's no food or water sources, except for the snow in winter. Attackers could easily lay siege to it. And how many could live there anyway? 40 or 50?

Somebody lived there. There are walls with mortar joints. Mortar takes water. Or at least some kind of mud when it rains.
