Interesting but not a place where people could independently live as there's no food or water sources, except for the snow in winter. Attackers could easily lay siege to it. And how many could live there anyway? 40 or 50?

Somebody lived there. There are walls with mortar joints. Mortar takes water. Or at least some kind of mud when it rains.

Yes, people obviously constructed the place and spent time there. They have snow for water in the winter, but this canyon today is obviously very arid as the vegetation reveals, and the wood supports would have long since rotted away if it was very humid. To have fires, they also need something to burn and there's hardly enough plant material there for that. maybe the climate was different 1000 years ago but I doubt it.

Everything they need to live there has to be carried into the place, and that arrangement is simply not conducive to life. There is a reason why cities pop up where there is some resource to support it. Farmland, mining, tourism... something. This place has nothing. Maybe it was a shamanistic vacation type retreat for them. But it's not a place where people could survive on a permanent basis against even a mildly determined enemy who needs to do nothing more than prevent anyone from going in or out for a couple months.

I saw a documentary a couple months ago about caves in Tibet that people were living in like 2500 years ago. But yes, I think they were emergency shelter under duress, not a lifestyle choice. Still, it must have taken decades to carve them.

“I am not one of those weak-spirited, sappy Americans who want to be liked by all the people around them. I don’t care if people hate my guts; I assume most of them do. The important question is whether they are in a position to do anything about it. My affections, being concentrated over a few people, are not spread all over Hell in a vile attempt to placate sulky, worthless shits.” - William S Burroughs
