All my buddies were MIA today. I swung by River City to see if Rainman's big rig was there, nope. I called him, he was truckin' up by Valpo, east if Chicongo. We usually all get together at Rainman's shed. Everybody goes there. No such luck today. I'll probably be with Kimmy the rest of the weekend unless she gets called in tomorrow. I'm on my own until about dark. Heaven forbid she should ever see me sober or not hungover.

I miss the 80s.

What's the latest on Rainman's granite slab?

It's done, looks good. I wasn't there the day when it got it put on the pylons with the mini-forklift, my back was fucked up. I really wanted to see that CF.

Last time I was over there, he was saying that Eric is going to bring over some kind of facing (tombstone) machine and knock off some of the sharp edges. I've gotta see that operation.

I haven't been there for three weeks, but I hear he's gone nutz with landscape blocks, making rings around trees, small retaining walls, benches, etc.

That shit's not my cup of tea. I live pretty simply. He's getting good use out of my diamond saw (like a mini water cooled circular saw). I don't even remember why I bought that thing, but I got a good deal on it at Lowe's years ago.

I don't know how to Xfer pics from my phone to the internet, but if you want pics, PM me your #. Don't blame you if you don't. LOL!

I'm not crazy about having my name, addy, email, phone in the public domain, but I get calls, emails, and letters every week wanting to buy my hovel that cost me $24,000 (not including the 10% interest loan from my mother) to build 44, 45 years ago. I wouldn't pay $10k for the joint, but I won't need it much longer.

FWIW: 10% for a home loan was about half the going rate at the time, thanks to the peanut farmer.

Thanks for the update. Sounded like a big project and I'm glad to hear it was a success. He'll enjoy that.

You made the right moves at a young age. Respect. I didn't own a home until 2009. Just barely got a roof over my family's heads before such things became impossible. My son bought some land in 2019, started timber framing a sweet home for himself. Got wiped out in 2021 when building materials went skyward. Moved back home and hasn't been back to his property in I don't know how long. It's a bitter pill for a young man.

I hope your son is a fighter, he's gonna need to be. We're all gonna need to be.

I guess I was fortunate. When my younger handicapped sister was born when I was about three, I was pretty much on my own. It made me a survivor.

(Edit) I just went out in my garage to have a smoke and watched a groundhog just outside my driveway gate eating the yellow heads off of dandelions. It brought to mind an old WWII navy vet that I met after my father died. He taught me a lot of survival tricks, like eating the yellow heads off of dandelions. You pick them, wash them, use an egg wash, flower and fry them. They're really tasty.

Ol' Jack also showed me these orange wildflower petals (I don't know what they're called) that are as good as lettuce. My neighbor across New Haven Avenue has those growing around her house, but she'd probably be pissed if I pick her petals. They're a tall plant, about three feet.

Sometimes you just gotta do, what you gotta do.

One of the last times I saw Jack was between assignments, Thanksgiving, probably the late 80s. He was dying of asbestosis (mesothelioma) and I picked him up in my CJ7 and took him to our (my and my (now ex) wife's previously mentioned 720 sqft hovel). I had to carry him like a baby. He was probably about a hundred pounds at the time.

Somewhere in between, my mother met a wonderful man, WWII AAF bomber ferry pilot that took care of her and my sister. T fucking MI. LOL.
