We are always being told that Israel is a close US ally. The degree of closeness ranges from "our closest ally in the Middle East" to "our best ally in the world", depending which talking head or politician is speaking. But WHY exactly do they consider Israel an ally? Israel provides nothing to the United States, yet WE provide security guarantees, political cover, and billions in taxpayer assistance each year in both military and economic aid. Israel tried to sink a US warship back in 1967, are we afraid they will win a war against us if we don't pay them ransom money each year? So again, someone please explain to me why Israel is considered to be a US ally, our "greatest".
