On October 23, 1983, Hizballah killed 241 U.S. military personnel, including 220 Marines, 18 sailors, and three soldiers in a terrorist bombing of the Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. Minutes later, a second suicide bomber killed 58 French paratroopers. Six innocent Lebanese civilians also lost their lives. The abhorrent and shocking attack on the Beirut barracks remains to this day the single deadliest day for the U.S. Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima. Today, forty years later, we mourn those service members of the Multinational Force in Lebanon lost in both attacks and we honor their legacy. We think of their families and friends, who continue to feel the painful absence of loved ones. As we reflect on this day, and in light of the ongoing challenges in Lebanon and the region, we remain committed to building a brighter future for Lebanon, the Lebanese people, and the broader Middle East.

The withdrawal of the PLO was accomplished by early September, and the bulk of the multinational force soon withdrew to ships in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. However, the assassination on September 14, 1982, of Lebanese president-elect Bashir Gemayel—the Phalangist leader of the Lebanese Forces, a unified Christian militia—sparked a wave of violence. Christian militiamen retaliated for Gemayel’s death by killing hundreds of Palestinians (estimates range from several hundred to several thousand) at the Ṣabr and Sht+l refugee camps. In the wake of the killings, troops were swiftly returned to Lebanon. The situation seemed to have stabilized by early 1983, and a small group of British peacekeepers joined the existing force in February of that year. On April 18, 1983, the illusion of calm was broken when a car bomb destroyed the U.S. embassy in West Beirut, killing dozens of American foreign service workers and Lebanese civilians. Although the notion of using a car or truck to deliver explosives to a target was not a new one —the Irish Republican Army made extensive use of the technique throughout the “Long War”—the suicide bombing of the U.S. embassy represented a sea change in tactics for militia groups and terrorist organizations in the Middle East. Israel and Lebanon signed a formal peace agreement the following month that called for the withdrawal of Israeli troops, contingent upon Syria’s withdrawal. Syria opposed the agreement, however, and refused to retreat. In July Israeli troops began a unilateral withdrawal from positions within Lebanon that they had held since June 1982. Fighting between competing militias escalated in the wake of the Israeli withdrawal, and violence against the multinational force increased, with U.S. Marine positions routinely coming under small arms and mortar fire. Circumstances took a crucial turn, however, when U.S. gunships in the Mediterranean shelled Syrian-backed Druze militias in support of the Christian government; the perceived role of the multinational force thus shifted from that of unaligned peacekeepers to active support of a particular faction in the Lebanese civil war. This was the backdrop when on the morning of October 23, 1983, a dump truck packed with an estimated 12,000 pounds (5,400 kg) of explosives crashed through the front gates of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut. The detonation ripped the four-story building from its foundation, and the barracks imploded in a matter of seconds. The 241 marines and sailors killed in the explosion represented the largest loss of life in a single day for the Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. Within moments of the attack, a second suicide bomber drove into the barracks of a French paratrooper detachment in West Beirut. The explosion toppled the building, and 58 soldiers inside were killed. Well golly shucks, you'd need to ask them.. Israel Charged With Systematic Harassment of U.S. Marines While you're at it, ask them why they machine gunned US sailors in lifeboats after they tried to sink the USS Liberty. Israel would only "piss off" the USA if the American public was convinced they did it. And as it stands now, Israel could almost say they did something like that and Israel supporters would scramble to find reasons to believe it was somehow reasonable. Take 911. There is evidence Mossad had advance knowledge because of the 5 dancing Israelis were arrested that day as they celebrated the attacks and "documented" it with recording and held lighters in front of the camera to mock it's burning and destruction. But unconditional Israel supporters will choose to find some explanation that doesn't taint Israel. But why would Israel at least celebrate the tower destruction, if not play a hand in making it happen? Obviously because the political fallout would greatly favor Israel. The event galvanized US public sentiment against Israel's enemies eventually leading to our destroying Iraq and Libya, invading Afghanistan and trying to destroy Syria. So why wouldn't Israel celebrate 911? So to answer questions like "why" countries like Israel would facilitate such things, you have to look at the geo-political fallout the event causes and then ask "Who does this benefit?" Then you have your first suspects. Take the Skripal chem weapon poisoning in the UK against a spy traded by Russia to the west. A very messy thing where chem weapon residue was left through sections of a UK city. Who benefits (and in this case, who is harmed) by the event? The immediate political fallout was a huge alienation of Russia. Trump expelled some 60 Russians from the USA and imposed sanctions and the world condemned it. But how did this benefit Russia? It didn't in any way, apart from a theoretical idea that Russia wanted to send a message to the world that it will destroy all spies. Well, okay, but did the have to do that with a Russia chemical weapon that polluted the UK public sector? That is hardly how Putin operates as the guy is simply smart and cunning enough to not do that sort of thing. At least in my view. No, what does make sense is that someone, somewhere, wanted to punish Russia for what they were doing at the time, and about the only thing of significance going on was they were saving Assad's butt by bombing ISIS and reversing their gains in Syria, which ultimately ended the matter. Now who would be upset at that? Two countries would be upset at that: Saudi Arabia and Israel. Both countries want the Assad regime ended. Both therefore, had reason to cheer for ISIS and be angered at Russian interference in Syria. Given the chem weapon was Russian made, it certainly had to have been a state actor, not some deranged criminal. Israel has also carried out assassinations before, as is well known. They tried to kill Arafat and then had to provide the antidote when they were caught. Israel assassinated Iranian nuke scientists as well, even forging an Irish passport along the way. Now regardless of whether one thinks Israel had justification for at least these 2 attacks is immaterial. What is material is that Israel has carried out extra judicial assassinations, and Israel certainly has within its means the ability to obtain small amounts of this chem weapon. So...
