Feed the dot-head to my sister's coyotes in Gary.

All I have is mice, squirrels, opossums, groundhogs, racoons, feral cats and whatever.

Take one quart canning jar with ring and lid, take one carp (either great white or lesser yellow) chop said carp into about 1 and 1 half inch cubes, stuff carp cubes into canning jar loosely apply lid and ring, bury the canning jar for 2 to 3 months in the ground, WARNING! at this point never get down wind of open jar, dig up jar and pour the carp oil into another canning jar and properly close the lid. Apply the carp oil liberally on liberals note warning. Racoons and feral cats cannot resist this concoction and will devour anything attached to it. If used in weather with temperatures below 0 Fahrenheit add two tablespoons bacon grease to concoction, note warning. Please keep in mind good hunting dogs are want to roll on such lathered liberals to conceal their scent.

I love you guys. Me and Doc got a kick out of your chicken talks.

Do you have to have a rooster banging a hen to lay eggs? I'm a mechanic and Kim is a doctor, we don't know.

I could have hens running around feeding me as long as there's no squalking going on.

No need for rooster(s) yes you may need more than one if eggs only are the goal. Some chickens make more noise than others. Right now I have my first go at incubating hatching two so far with three or more starting. Any way roosters are more for protection of the hens mine has fought off both hawks and dogs and they keep order through out the flock. you'll want one rooster for every fifteen or so hens. Fertile eggs are perfectly fine to eat.

Just had another hen get broody. Unfortunately, she was trying to sit on eggs in the roll out nest box, and of course the eggs wouldn't stay under her. When I moved her, after dark, to another coup (with regular nest boxes), she lost her broodiness. Can't win.

Do you have to have a rooster

I have a dandy rooster that I bought from an 80-year-old woman who lives on a farm so far back in the woods they have to go towards town to go hunting.

She had been selectively keeping only the roosters that had a single white feather amongst the tail plumage. I put him in the chicken yard with a mean barred rock rooster half again as big as him. Could have sold tickets to the fight. The barred rock won after an extended battle, but he was so mean to the hens that I dispatched him later that night. White Feather is a great rooster...he's a lover, not a fighter (although he has grown physically and has some wicked moves when challenged).

As of 1230 CDT today four have hatched plus another four cracked shells. I've had a couple birds go half broody the old gray hen will stick with it to the point of rustling chicks from hens she didn't think they were doing it right. My barred rock rooster is year and a half now, around 12 pounds, 2 inch plus spurs. His tail feathers are starting to grow back after dealing with the neighbor's dogs. Haven't had Sammy the red rooster in with the gals for about eight months he's same age as the barred rock about same size, waiting for my new easter eggers to start laying (late July) so I can put him in with them, maybe the Rhode Island reds too. Now I'm looking for a Jersey Giant rooster. I like the barred rocks, they're easy to sex.

half broody

I wonder. My hen will get back on the nest, then get out and walk around clucking, then right back to the nest. Half broody comes to mind.

I can breed cattle like nothing, but I can't hatch a chick to save my life. Last year I incubated 28 eggs...got one chick that lived six months.

I've found it normal for my brood hens to leave the eggs for up to 45 minutes at a time to eat and dust bathe. Right now we are running around 97 degrees day time so nesting boxes stay warm for some time. Biggest problem I have is brooder getting up and having a plymouth jump in the box start knocking stuff around, worse than cats on ones work bench. Any way that is why I shelled out $160. on an incubator, holds 41 eggs auto turning works good just hope it's easy to clean for the next run. Incubator! the best way to make three weeks seem an eternity.

Just had number seven hatch, the eggs were loaded into incubator over a three day period; 8 eggs, 7 eggs, 8 eggs. last of hatch should be late tomorrow or early Wednesday. So far, I am pleased with the hatch rate.

It is said that silkie hens are naturally broody and they do well confined, just a thought.

Good news!

Eggs are a good source of protein and nutrients.

Those chickens will keep you alive if things fall apart.

And chickens can be hidden inside your house if need be...cows...not so much

That and chicken dung is high in nitre just grow the crystals, stock up on sulfur, charcoal is easy to come by, they used to use charcoal made from peach pits as the lining for chemical, biological and radiation suits, maybe they still do I retired from that stuff 20+ years ago.
