Patton's tanks were east of the Elbe River but were forced to withdraw because of the 1943 Tehran Accords. this set up the Iron Curtain for the division of Europe between east and west. The Iron Curtain did not fall until the term of Ronald Reagan as POTUS.
Hitler did not commit suicide and was allowed to escape to Spain in exchange for German scientists and technology (Operation Paperclip). I know this from reading the books Gestapo Chief by Gregory Douglas.
