I worked on the Illinois State Highways with a Ukrainian-American man. He told me his Grandma told him when the Bolsheviks took over, they even raked out their root cellars.
About 20 years ago when driving trucks, we picked up a load of fresh frozen chickens in Nebraska to be delivered to AG in Springfield, MO.
I had this green kid named Chad as a co-driver. He was driving back with the load. I sat up with him until we got to the point there was no way he could have made a mistake. I told him, "You go up to the 4-way stop, make a left turn and go across the river and take I-29 south." I hit the sleeper.
I woke up and opened the sleeper curtain just in time to see the sign 'KANSAS STATE LINE 4 MILES". I said, "Stop this truck right now. How are you going to explain being in Kansas when you're not supposed to be there?"
I had to back us into a gravel road, turn us around and get us back to where we were supposed to be. And then route him around the scale north of Kansas City since if they were checking logs, it would have been heavy fines.
I told him, "Take Hwy 7 over to U.S. 65 and turn right. If you are not sure you are on the right road, wake me up."
He woke me up and I could tell by the angle the tractor was sitting he was on the right road. Hwy 7 took a curve to the south before going back east again.
We had all day to get to AG. ;)
