Before bush the younger our deployments were six or so months. On a boat 264 feet long 39 feet at the beam 75 of us were, nary an inch to swing a dead cat. Three or four hours of rack time was about the best in a 24 hour period.
This guy I worked with was coming off an all nighter. They told him to fuel up the diesel pick up. He went to the gas station and put gas in the diesel tanks. They had to drain the tanks after that one. I bet if I called him right now and mentioned the incident, he might not remember it. Mine Counter Measures, a minesweeper but hey every boat is a minesweeper, once. As a Mineman I knew it was a one-way trip into the mine field.

My battle station was gun boss all mounts, weren't but two M2 Brownings and a couple hand me down M60s, I'd run out of barrels before I ran out of ammo. Hell we still had M14s, didn't get M9s until '97.
I used to own an Astra. It was made in Spain during the WWII era. There is an interesting story behind these 9mm pistols. A German buyer and Spanish seller met in Paris. I would deliver it by the gallon to beauty shops on the south side. she told me, "Don't take any checks from those people." So, I collected CASH. By the time I finished I had $500 to $800 on me. Plus, I stayed OFF the side streets. One time I was making a right turn at 95th and Stony Island on the SE side. There was a KABOOM off to my left. I floored it and got out of there. I looked at the driver door later and there were ding marks on it like maybe they shot a .410 at me. My father was a Gunner's Mate 1/C...July 7,1942 - October 10, 1945 This was his boat. His gun was one of the mid-ship turrets...can't remember which one. Went to several reunions with him...enjoyed every minute of it. I love those Fletcher class destroyers.

If we had fair winds and following seas we could make 16 knots, I made that kind of speed in my 27 foot 48 inch beam banca with 16 HP Briggs for the power plant. Either a 3in38 or 5in54 on the bow.

I didn't need booze to get chickee-poos chasing me in the old days. It helps a little now, but Kimmy drinks to assuage her conscience, not because I'm THAT ugly and banged up. Having lost my teeth in the accident ten years ago hasn't been all bad, especially for the gals. I keep my nails trimmed pretty good too, if you know what I mean! I told the girls here at the plumber's office that I knew a guy that would deliver a quarter ounce of blow to the Rolling Stones dressing room before every show.
