Before bush the younger our deployments were six or so months. On a boat 264 feet long 39 feet at the beam 75 of us were, nary an inch to swing a dead cat. Three or four hours of rack time was about the best in a 24 hour period.

My battle station was gun boss all mounts, weren't but two M2 Brownings and a couple hand me down M60s, I'd run out of barrels before I ran out of ammo. Hell we still had M14s, didn't get M9s until '97.

I used to own an Astra. It was made in Spain during the WWII era. There is an interesting story behind these 9mm pistols. A German buyer and Spanish seller met in Paris. The German buyer killed the Spanish seller and stole the pistols. They were being carried by the Luftwaffe. Most of the bluing was worn off it. The first time I took it apart to clean it, there was still cosmoline in the main spring housing. I carried that in a shoulder holster in the late 70s when I was making cosmetics deliveries in Chicago. This woman had a purple fluid the took kinks out of black's hair. I would deliver it by the gallon to beauty shops on the south side. she told me, "Don't take any checks from those people." So, I collected CASH. By the time I finished I had $500 to $800 on me. Plus, I stayed OFF the side streets. One time I was making a right turn at 95th and Stony Island on the SE side. There was a KABOOM off to my left. I floored it and got out of there. I looked at the driver door later and there were ding marks on it like maybe they shot a .410 at me. Some of those people just don't like whites. :-/
My father was a Gunner's Mate 1/C...July 7,1942 - October 10, 1945 This was his boat. His gun was one of the mid-ship turrets...can't remember which one. Went to several reunions with him...enjoyed every minute of it. I love those Fletcher class destroyers.
