NEW HAVEN, Ind. (WANE) — The Maumee Valley Steam & Gas Association invites you to come to the 47th annual Summer Show, showing engines of the past, and how hard work was in the past, even in the 1900s.

Maumee Valley Summer Show starts Thursday and features John Deere, Ford, Garden tractors and gas engines. Other brands are welcome as well. Other antiques include an old sawmill, a massive engine called the ‘125 HP Buckeye Oil Engine, tractor rides, along with more engine activities.

WANE 15 spoke with the president of the Maumee Valley Steam & Gas Association, Tony Herman, and he said Friday and Saturday are the best days to go with the amount of activities planned.

The show at Jefferson Township Park in New Haven will feature more than just engines. At the showgrounds, there will be a massive boiler, a blacksmith house, train rides for kids, hayrides, a flea market, wooden shingles, and a camping area over the event.

Food will be provided through the show, featuring $2 sweet corn, homemade ice cream, and special dinners on Friday and Saturday.

Herman said this is a great opportunity to show kids how hard people had to work back in the day, showing how much easier today’s work is. It is also a learning environment of engine history.

This event will run from Thursday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to roughly 10 p.m., at 1702 South Webster Road. Price of admission is $5 a day, or you can buy access to all four days for $10. Instead of fixed ticket prices Sunday, there will be a free-will donation opportunity at the admission gate.

This is pretty cool, but I doubt that it would be Kimmy's cup of tea glass of vodka. I'll ask her if I remember. She might surprise me.

The one to see is the Fort Wayne Airshow at the FWA 122nd Tactical Fighter Wing. It happens every three years, the next one is in 2025.

“The most terrifying force of death comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone.
TRUE TERROR will arrive at these people’s door, and they will cry, scream, and beg for mercy…
but it will fall upon the deaf ears of the Men who just wanted to be left alone.”

Herman said this is a great opportunity to show kids how hard people had to work back in the day, showing how much easier today’s work is.

I worked my butt off my whole life. Nowadays kids just can't get a leg up.

In Chicago, I worked for the Republican Committeeman. One day I was walking past his office and he waved me inside. He asked if I was working. I told him I was not.

He said, "I'll get you a job. Go to the Secretary of State office on Elson and get your license to drive a truck."

After I did that he told me to go downtown to the State of Illinois Building and take the test for Highway Maintainer.

I did that and was maybe the fourth or fifth to finish the test. It was a common sense test and there were a bunch of black guys there who were scratching their heads.

You had to get 90% correct to pass the test.

About a month later I received my Letter of Appointment. It was for "full time probation". I was to report to Northbrook maintenance yard.

When I walked in and handed my letter of Appointment to the Lead, Lead Worker, he read it and said, "We haven't had a Probation here in three years." That was testament I had clout.

I ended up putting in for a transfer to Arlington yard in 1988. The Engineer called the HQ and told them, "Don't send him where he wants to go. Send him some place far away."

They sent me where I wanted to go. The Engineer asked, "Who did you tell?" I replied, "I told my Chinaman." He was my clout.

I had my right arm in a sling from a Epicondylectomy I had just a few week previous and when I reported to the Arlington yard, there was one of the guys there who was saying he was the best Lute man (finishing rake for asphalt patches). The Lead, Lead (He had transferred from Northbrook to Arlington) told that guy, "You're not the best Lute Man, he is. But he can't do that right now."

After he retired, I was able to lute my first asphalt patch and the new Lead, Lead said to the other guy, "You didn't tell me he could do that."

To make a long story short, I left the State Highways and started to drive tractor trailers OTR and did that even after I moved to Missouri.

My first truck driving gig in Missouri paid $750 a week in CASH for a dedicated run to Florida every week. We had to drive around Lookout mountain in SE Tennessee every week. We drove team. And you just trust your co-driver to not get into any wrecks. We were always close to Gross Weight of 80,000 pounds and with full duel tanks would sometime be over gross.

One time I was riding with the boss. We were at truck stop in Jackson, Georgia and he told me, "Put om 100 gallons of fuel and take a shower." I said, "You know we have to roll across that scale further south..." He told me again, "Put on the fuel and take a shower." I did and when we rolled across that scale it was 750 pounds over on the drive axles. That was a $75 fine. I told him. And he still had to pay it. Overweight fines are not tax deductible, so he had to eat that one.

This is very old memory from 20 years ago and am thankful to recall it since the meningitis wiped out so much memory. ;)
