A recent investigation has uncovered a misuse of funds by six employees at the New York City Department of Education (DOE). According to the Special Commissioner of Investigation (SCI), these workers used money allocated for homeless students to finance their own family vacations.
The funds, intended for educational trips, were reportedly used for vacations to Disney World, Washington, D.C., and other locations. Linda Wilson, a DOE region manager, is central to the scandal. The report accuses her of using city funds for her daughters trips and encouraging other staff to do likewise.
Wilson allegedly forged documents to allow her family members on trips meant for students. A planned educational visit to Syracuse University in June 2018 was reportedly diverted to Niagara Falls instead. Syracuse University confirmed that no tour was conducted.
The investigation revealed that Wilson was aware of the scrutiny and took steps to cover her actions. She reportedly canceled a planned trip to Philadelphia and told colleagues to provide false statements, saying, What happens here stays with us.
