Here's the deal, New-Scum is taking bribes from producers, grocers, etc., so they can march out garbage. Who's going to return it? I actually returned a big bag of Skittles for my Godson's little girl that was all melted together to Kroger for a replacement. The gal at the service counter said, "they smell OK."
I said, "My grand daughter doesn't need quarter pound Skittle blobs. They don't fit in her Skittle gumball machine." My older sister bought the Squirt the thing at an estate auction.
'Sell By'
Best if used by, use by, etc. Last time I was at Kroger they were selling gallons of milk for half price because it was near the best if used by date. I bought some fancy sesame seed buns at Kroger a while ago half off.
Milk: Whole milk usually keeps well beyond the "date", 2% or below is spoiled before I get home (slight exaggeration). I've never had half & half go bad. I think the less they beat up milk, the longer it lasts. I don't use much milk now that McMurphy went home to Lithuania, and subsequently God. She was a cereal eater. I just get milk in half gallons now.
Bread products: I deep freeze all bread products. It keep almost forever and freezing it is supposed to have some health benefit, I don't remember what, but it might reduce the glycemic index or something. Kimmy likes these little pecan swirl breakfast thingys for a snack, they last forever frozen.
Rotation: I try to be careful when I'm putting stuff away to maintain FIFO (first in first out) so I don't end up with 10 year old cans of stuff. It's kind of hard to do that in the bottom of a deep freezer without some reference or it gets mixed up.
