Ukrainian Armed Forces soldier Natalia Hrabarchuk destroyed a Russian cruise missile during a massive attack on Ukraine on Nov. 17 using an Igla man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS), according to the Air Force.

Ukrainian officers said Hrabarchuk completed a five-month training program at a military training center, mastering various types of MANPADS. On Nov. 17, during her first combat launch, she successfully hit her target.

“When the enemy missile was in front of me, I pushed aside all emotions and anxiety. I had completed hundreds of training launches on simulators. And now—my first combat launch, and I hit the target! The MANPADS weighs about 18 kilograms, and the responsibility weighs heavily, too. I’m very glad I succeeded. After the mission, I allowed myself to feel some emotions,” Hrabarchuk said.

“Our mobile fire group includes women service members. We give our all to achieve results and put in maximum effort,” she added.

In civilian life, Hrabarchuk worked as a preschool teacher. Since 2021, she has served as an anti-aircraft gunner in the air defense unit of the Halychyna-Volyn Radio Engineering Brigade under the Air Command West.

Russia’s attack on Ukraine on Nov. 17

During the night and morning of Nov. 17, Russia launched attacks on Ukraine’s power generation and transmission infrastructure using various types of missiles and drones. Explosions were reported in Kyiv, Odesa, Zaporizhzhya, Dnipro, Vinnytsia, Mykolaiv, and Kryvyi Rih.

Emergency power outages were implemented in Kyiv and other regions due to morning strikes. Critical infrastructure in Vinnytsia Oblast was hit, and similar attacks targeted infrastructure in Rivne Oblast. Zaporizhzhya was hit three times by Russian forces.

According to Maksym Kozytskyi, head of the Lviv Oblast Military Administration, missile debris caused a fire in the Sheptytskyi district, where garages and a car burned.

The Air Force of Ukraine reported that Russia used 210 missiles and drones during the attack, with air defense forces successfully destroying 144 aerial targets.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian pilots flying F-16 fighter jets downed about 10 aerial targets during the massive strike.
