Yahoo is oppressing me! To wit, censoring such innocuous comments such as:

Bird flu would be worse with caged up chickens and not like free range chickens on the farm or in rural areas. ;)

a reminder to avoid our Irish symbolism,

My Aunt in Chicago called the Irish that lived across the street, "cow shit Irish".

In winter we would build a snow fort in the back yard. The Irish kid that lived across the street would come in and brak it down. One year we hosed it down with water and turned it to ice.

We were laughing our asses off when he hit it and would slide off.

And you do know the St. Vallentine Day massacre in Chicago was the Italian mob rubbing out the Irish mob. "Let's mosey." :-/

Actually, egg production hens are hybrids that have a productive life span of two years, they are expected to lay 280 plus eggs per year. Those birds not making eggs make soup, broth, cat and dog food.

Yes, they are laying very well, looks like the youngest of them that hatched back in June/July are starting to lay. Basically, I have at this time three separate flocks each with their own lead rooster. During the day they all free range more or less together and they all know which coop to go to at night. I'm at twenty-four hens so I'm taking in around a dozen eggs daily. I trade many of the eggs to a neighbor for beef from cattle he butchers.

I need this...especially more roosters.

I'm still fumbling around making poor decisions, no doubt. I had two broody hens this summer that sat a total of 16 eggs, resulting in only 4 surviving birds. Many of the eggs were simply infertile. Still can't determine the sex of the new birds...I think 3 are roosters and 1 hen.

Normally I have an automatic light in the coop (days getting short here in Maine) but this year I'm giving them a rest over winter.

When the chicks are two days old gently extent a wing and look at their pin feathers to see if they are same length(male) or look staggered(female). My hen Lil Kim went broody yesterday, after a few days of moving her off the eggs she'll go back to normal, even here in coastal bend Texas I'm holding off on natural or incubator hatching till the peach trees blossom (around the ninth of February). Breed of bird has a lot to do with hatch rates, old wives tale says a normal oval shaped egg will hatch a hen and rounder eggs hatch roosters. Once they are older look at their cape feathers pointed tips are most likely roosters round tips are most likely hens. I don't regulate them 12 and 12 I just open or close various windows. Note on Lil Kim, she is off spring of a Plymouth rock rooster and a black copper maran/easter egger hen who lays brown eggs, Lil Kim lays olive-colored eggs.

peach trees

When we ran big trucks from Missouri to Florida 20 years ago, we would stop at truck stop in Jackson, Georgia. Sometimes we would eat the buffet for lunch. They has good peach cobbler.

One time I was riding with the boss. He told me, "Put on 100 gallons of fuel and take a shower."

I told him, "You know we have to roll across that scale further south.*

He told me again. "Put on the fuel and take a shower."

We rolled across that scale and the drives were 750 over. That was $75 cash and he had to pay it.

I told them in the scale house, "It must have been that fuel we put on in Jackson." They said, "Musta been."

I told him but he would not listen. :-/

Heck, they bloom before they are leaved complete with bees. This February they bloomed twice, once on time and again after two-day frost. When the birds hit five months the roosters will start trying to crow after that there is no more guessing.

Notre Dame

A few of the girls I graduated with in Chicago went to Notre Dame. I think a couple of them made the cheerleader squad.

One buddy of mine in Chicago told me, "When the Bears and Notre Dame both lost on the same weekend it was like, "Hello? Suicide hotline?" LOL

I bought the Concerts for the People of Kampuchea album as soon as it was out, I was like 14 years old. But I was never "In Country". I have sussed out enough about what happened to reinforce my aversion to State authority.

Glad to help, on a sad note Tina Turner passed yesterday. she was a black copper maran laid eggs that ran at 67 to 84 grams. She only did the 84 gram once that egg had four yolks.

Some folks say chickens get "egg bound". Don't know if that's a thing, or not. My chickens will sometimes start acting sickly...and just die.

I wonder what caused Tina Turner's passing.

Sorry for your loss...

Actually that was my thought, the way she just hung out at the coop when the doors were opened. Not as much glove to check for egg binding as that required to see if cow is with calf.
