On the TV show 12 O'clock High about the B-17s that flew out of England, a waist gunner shot down three Bf-109's in 15 minutes. Col. Gallegher, who was the commander of that group, said he would put that gunner in for a Silver Star.

So what then is a bronze star other than a somewhat more minor award for valor? ;)
