On Monday, the US State Department backed Israels seizure of territory in Syria that came after the collapse of the government of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, framing it as a defensive action.
Israel seized a buffer zone between the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and the rest of Syrias territory that was established in 1974 and also captured several areas beyond the zone. When asked about the land grab, State Department spokesman Matt Miller said it was important to put the situation in context.
