Tomorrow will arrive our vet to help our near eighteen year old chow-mix friend across the bridge: he's been blind, deaf, and now going into renal failure for over the course of the last year. I hope that someone is so kind to me when my time comes.

oh, jim, i'm so sad for you. i know the hurt you feel and how very difficult this is, but may you be comforted by the knowledge that you and pam gave him a great life. *hug*
Don't be afraid to weep. I know I wouldn't. The dog I grew with from the age of 5 to 16 passed away when I was on the road. The dog was in Norfolk, VA and I had been in Charleston, SC for about 5 days when for reasons that I still do not understand I called my mother just to ask about that dog, and he had passed when the feeling came over me the night before. The dog wasn't sick when I left. I had a connection with that animal that transcended the miles and the spoken word. Your family member and loyal companion was on duty all those years ready to lay down his life for you, and what you're about to do is the ultimate act of love for him.
Thanks so much - coming from a true love lover of critters, it is much appreciated. Give the kitties an extra skritch for me...
Sorry Jim, you'll not be allowed the dignity that your dog is, it might cut into some damn drug company's profits. Sorry to hear about your pet, Godspeed.

Thankfully, you've had your buddy for near 18 years.......that's 5 more than we had our ol Bear Dog who suffered with the same conditions. We sent him over the bridge before winter set it cause it woulda been too rough on him. I'll be thinkin of ya. Dee
As Mark Twain opined, "If there's no dogs in heaven; then I don't want to go there." I can't disagree with his take on this one.
And his name is Bud. Thanks, friend. (It's not any easier for those of us who see the ebb and flow of life out on the range...not any easier, at all.)

heheh - the first time a cop friend came over and Bud, snarling and barking, made it to the top of the fence, my friend remarked, "I see that you have the best possible home protection." Before he lost his sight and hearing, we prolly could have left the place unlocked as long as Bud was on duty. Heaven now has one heck of a watchdog on site.
It was my turn yesterday, Jim. My Zena is now with your Bud waiting for us. She loved her poppa, and she was my girl, a beautiful blond Shepherd mix. A hard day.
