The volcano, called Axial Seamount, is more than 3,600-feet-tall and sits half a mile underwater just 300 miles off the coast of Oregon. Experts made the prediction on December 10 after detecting seafloor swelling around Axial that mimicked a level seen immediately before an eruption in 2015. Seismic activity has also increased, with hundreds of earthquakes generated around the volcano per day and earthquake swarms greater than 500 per day. 'Based on the current trends, and the assumption that Axial will be primed to erupt when it reaches the 2015 inflation threshold, our current eruption forecast window is between now (July 2024) and the end of 2025,' researchers said in the new study.

Seems a tsunami would be the only concern, and that may not even happen. Half a mile underwater means it's got a lot of hydro pressure on it the lava needs to push through just to displace the water. Water also won't boil at that depth no matter how hot it gets.

I'd think it a good chance an eruption will not even be noticed outside of scientific instruments.

I don't know the exact ratios, but I am thinking even a tsunami like the 2004 Indian Ocean event would have a much less devastating effect on US West Coast just due to geography. Except for the cities with their large rivers or even sounds (looking at you Puget), a lot of the NW coast seems to have a lot of cliffs. Might be some erosion, but little if any flooding.

The large cities have all sorts of locks and such to deal unexpected water.

“I am not one of those weak-spirited, sappy Americans who want to be liked by all the people around them. I don’t care if people hate my guts; I assume most of them do. The important question is whether they are in a position to do anything about it. My affections, being concentrated over a few people, are not spread all over Hell in a vile attempt to placate sulky, worthless shits.” - William S Burroughs
