Pismo Beach clams are an endangered species. If you happen to be on that beach and spot a clam, dig a small hole in the sand and insert the clam with the hinge side down and cover it up.

I saw a story about this Mom and her little girl who were picking them up. The authorities caught them and there were massive fines involved, ;)
