My dad teached me to do that, then he said hold this wire put your finger by the spark plug one quick tug of starter rope was all I needed to ascertain the mower did indeed have spark. I almost completely lost my desire to learn small gas engine repair.

Reminds me of the time my friend Doug and I hooked a bicycle generator to a 3-phase router motor then touched it to a piece of plywood and it caught fire. We were only hoping to etch Egyptian Eye or something, best I recall. I'm glad his younger brother started breathing again.
