Mysterious tick-borne diseases began spreading across the area in the late 60s, coinciding with the location of a U.S. government biological weapons facility.

Lyme disease didn’t become a significant issue until the mid-70s, yet three highly virulent tick-borne diseases, Lyme arthritis, Rickettsia, and Babesia, started emerging right near Plum Island’s biological weapons research site.
