‘Go Find Another Sucker Nation’: Trump Fires Off Fresh Threat to Ten More Countries

WHO NOW?

It is not clear what prompted the president’s latest threatening rant.

President Donald Trump took to social media on Thursday night to threaten 10 more countries with tariffs if they replace the U.S. dollar as their reserve currency.

“The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar, while we stand by and watch, is OVER,” he wrote in a post on Truth Social. “We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs.”

It wasn’t immediately clear what inspired the evening rant. Starting Saturday, Trump also plans to hit Mexico and Canada with 25 percent tariffs.

In late November, Trump posted almost the exact same threat verbatim against the BRICS countries, a term that was originally coined to describe the emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China.

They’ve since formed an official international organization that also includes South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.

An exchange with a reporter at the Oval Office on Jan. 20 revealed Trump didn’t even know which countries were in BRICS.

A bigger threat to the U.S. Dollar is China moving to release a 20% gold backed Yuan. If that happens the Dollar would crumble into dust since it is backed by nothing but promises to pay.

I never read "The Art of the Deal" but does it include the strategy of trying to force other parties to comply with your will with generous amounts of hostility?

Seems to me Trump is running the risk of incentivizing these foreign countries to unionize against the USA. Certainly the wording of the above, referring to other countries as "seemingly hostile" and the dollar as "mighty" is pushing things quite a bit. Certainly nothing good can come out of using a whip on the rest of the world that has 94% of the world's population.

Can you imagine all other countries announcing a 100% tariff on all US exports?

I wondered why you support Trump. Between this and his great idea about the future of Gaze I don't think you are going to like him for long.

Here is your assignment. Get started.

The U.S. really does not export very much these days. Most of our manufacturing was shut down and moved overseas or to Mexico because of over regulation and corporate profits.

During Trump's first term he put sanctions on China which forced many businesses there to move to tax friendlier locations such as Malaysia or Vietnam

He put sanctions on Russia also. The guy that drives me to see the doctor up north buys vape cartridges. He told me the first ones came from Rusia and lasted for two months. But he cannot get them any longer and the new ones only last a few weeks.

I don't know if you can call that progress or not. ;)

There are things about Trump I both like and dislike, and that was true during his first term. That he loves Israel so passionately is something I do not like.

We need to move away from this litmus test idea that we have to either love or hate everything about someone.

The U.S. really does not export very much these days.

From: https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/balance-of-trade

The trade deficit in the US widened to $78.2 billion in November 2024 compared to a revised $73.6 billion gap in October and roughly in line with forecasts. Imports rose 3.4% to $351.6 billion, the biggest gain since March 2022, led by purchases of foods, feeds, and beverages, semiconductors, passenger cars, civilian aircraft, nonmonetary gold and crude oil. Meanwhile, exports rose 2.7% to a record high of $273.4 billion, led by sales of other petroleum products, passenger cars, pharmaceutical preparations, crude oil, plastic materials, trucks, buses, and special purpose vehicles and civilian aircraft engines.

So the trade imbalance is about 56.25% vs 43.75%

Unless TV tells us to. :)

The important question is whether they are in a position to do anything about it.
