Machine Gun Jack McGurn was Al Capone's bodyguard. Capone bought a box seat at Wrigley Field and he bought one for McGurn who would sit right behind him.

McGurn was a natural lefty. Something spooked him at a game and he was reaching inside his jacket for the .45 Colt auto in a shoulder holster.

Can you imagine if there had been a shooting at a game in Wrigley Field? ;)

The bees have been coming back with large loads of pollen, if one has pollen allergies eating local honey will decrease the severity of the symptoms.

I was a beekeeper when I lived in Chicago and environs. There were pear trees nearby in Chicago and I got some really great light honey in spring. ;)

When I moved to Missouri I could not bring the hives along, but there was another beekeeper nearby who took them over. ;)

I've been thinking about keeping a hive or two in my attic...due to the cold winters here.

The attic is cold enough to make the bees hibernate, but much warmer than outdoors.

Just to winter over or year-round? Langstroth hives would be a real pain with all the stacking and unstacking, Horizontal Layens hive would be a good choice. If the attic has a domer window it's just a matter of rigging the block and tackle and some MHE.

Year-round...and I'd need to tend the hive from inside the attic (which doesn't sound too practical)

Horizontal Layens hive

I'll start looking into this design

You need to smoke the hive before you try to lift the top cover. The smoke makes the bees think there is a fire nearby and they gorge themselves on honey, which makes it harder for them to sting. The smoke needs to dissipate too and that would be much more difficult indoors. ;)

I saw this hive design a few years back.

This is what I want.

I didn't know this...thanks!

Actually depends on the strain of bees, some are more aggressive than others. When the hive smells of banana they are pissed. You should not find any Africanized bees as far north as you are. Mail order bees are not as hardy as those from a wild swarm, you can find swarm attractant on amazon.

I rescued a hive once and those bees were just plain mean. I had to requeen it. ;)

A friend of mine saw my German Shepard licking his gonads and said he wished he could do that I advised him to see if the dog would let him pet him first.
