Milk Thistle, scientifically known as Silybum marianum, is renowned for several health benefits, primarily due to its active compound, silymarin. Here are some of the key benefits:

Liver Health Support:

Hepatoprotective Effects: Milk Thistle is most famous for its liver- protective properties. Silymarin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that help in protecting liver cells from damage by toxins, alcohol, and various liver diseases like hepatitis and cirrhosis. Liver Regeneration: It may aid in the regeneration of liver cells, which is beneficial in cases where liver tissue has been damaged or destroyed.

Antioxidant Properties:

Silymarin acts as an antioxidant, helping to neutralize free radicals.

This can reduce oxidative stress in the body, which is linked to numerous chronic diseases.

Anti-inflammatory Effects:

By reducing inflammation, milk thistle could potentially benefit conditions characterized by inflammation such as arthritis or inflammatory bowel diseases.

Cholesterol Management:

Some studies suggest that milk thistle can improve lipid profiles by lowering LDL ("bad") cholesterol and increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol, though more research is needed for conclusive evidence.

Possible Cancer Prevention:

Preliminary research indicates that silymarin might have chemopreventive properties against certain cancers, particularly those of the skin, prostate, and breast. However, this area requires more human studies to confirm.

Diabetes Management:

There's some evidence suggesting that milk thistle might help in managing diabetes by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing blood sugar levels.

Skin Health:

Due to its antioxidant properties, it might be beneficial in treating skin conditions like acne or aiding in skin regeneration after UV exposure.

Gallbladder Disorders:

It has been traditionally used to promote bile production, which can help in the treatment of gallbladder issues.

Important Considerations:

Dosage and Form: Milk thistle is available in various forms like capsules, tablets, liquid extracts, and teas. The effectiveness can vary based on the form and preparation.

Side Effects: Generally considered safe, but some might experience mild side effects like diarrhea, nausea, or bloating. Allergic reactions are rare but possible.

Interactions: It can interact with certain medications, particularly those metabolized by the liver, so it's advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before starting supplementation, especially if you're on medication for liver conditions, diabetes, or cholesterol.

While milk thistle offers several potential health benefits, much of the research is still in preliminary stages or based on animal studies. It's always best to approach supplementation with caution and under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

Poster Comment:

I started taking this once a day years ago as part 6 herbs in German alternative medicine program to protect the heart. I passed an echocardiogram because of that herbal formula. A few months ago I read about Milk Thistle and decided to take it twie a day.

I just started taking Berberine.

Thistle

Thistle is literally Satan in the form of a weed. The tap root goes down into hell to receive its energy.

Once a single thistle plant grows in a pasture it will be there for eternity. Roundup won't kill it.

Cows graze at least 12 inches away from the plant for fear of the inch long needles that grow on it.

Behold the demon...

Then, I discovered it can be used to make cheese :)

Roundup kills thistle.

Seeds from it will come back but you just hit them too.

Dead and gone forever.

If you have a huge pasture it will be more difficult of course.

What is really difficult for me to get rid of are morning glories. They pop up by the thousands in my garden every year.

I treat them individually by slipping a cone shield around the plant so that the Roundup doesn't touch any of the surrounding grass.

I'm beginning to think the thistle in my pastures are Roundup resistant.

I just know a lady I worked for had lots of thistle. They were in her ivy. I just sprayed them several times until they didn't come back anymore. I let it hit the ivy because roundup doesn't seem to affect English Ivy much. Even if it did there is so much it would just come back.

Morning glories take over my garden to different degrees every year.

I had a trap I hauled away for a guy. It was one of those big swimming pool tarps. I burnt holes in it at corn spacing. Every 10 inches I think. Then planted the corn in those holes. It kept most of the morning glories out but they still slip thru in places.

I do the same with tomatoes and peppers. Except I use left over landscaping fabric from jobs I have done. I've used black plastic too. It works pretty good but morning glories still pop up thru the holes. I've used roundup on them also. It kills them but a couple weeks later there are tons more coming up. I think I let them get to out of control and there must be millions of seeds in the ground.

Do you ever eat polk weed berries?

You have to keep away from the tiny seeds in them because they are poisonous. I wouldn't recommend eating the berries because you might die.

I've eaten some though without the seeds.

It is listed as one of the 5 most healing herbs. I doubt Satan is in the earth. Grounding (walking either barefoot on grass or with grounding shoes) has tremendous benefits for the human body.

I doubt Satan is in the earth.

You are right again. Satan is the prince of the power of the 𝙖𝙞𝙧.

walking...barefoot on grass

I went barefoot when I was a kid. Mowed the lawn (if you could call it that) barefoot. Lucky to still have my toes.

thistle

When we worked for Illinois State Highways on the Mowing crew, the Engineer came out and told us he wanted us to weed whack a hill with thistles using hand whips.

He left. We had five gallon can of gasoline. We poured out the gas and threw a match. The vegetation was wet, so the fire did not spread. ;)
