China flagged a recent modification by the United States government in its fact sheet, indicating a lack of American opposition to an independent Taiwan on Monday.

Guo Jiakun, the spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, said that the US "gravely backpedaled" on its stance on Taiwan, sending the wrong message to "separatist forces" after the US State Department updated their Taiwan factsheet.

"We urge the U.S. to ... stop emboldening and supporting Taiwan independence and avoid further damaging China-U.S. relations and the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait," Guo said at the daily media briefing.

China sends chilling 11-word threat to US over Taiwan independence The State Department removed the phrase "we do not support Taiwan independence" from its fact sheet last week on its website.

This is the second time the State Department did so, after briefly removing the phrase in May 2022. They restored the statement after a couple of weeks due to heavy backlash from China.

It's unclear why the State Department changed the language again and whether it signals any shift in policy under US President Donald Trump, who returned to the White House for a second term last month.

During the civil war in 1949 that brought the communists to power in China, China and Taiwan split. Defeated nationalists fled to Taiwan and established a rival government.

While Taiwan has its own government and military, they have never declared formal independence from China.

The island of Taiwan is separated from the Chinese east coast by a narrow strip of water known as the Taiwan Strait.

China has been adamant about gaining control over the island, flexing its military muscle by ramping up military exercises around Taiwan.

Taiwan's government welcomed the move, though a statement sent to The Associated Press on Monday did not mention the language specifically.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has noted that the U.S. State Department updated the 'Current State of U.S.-Taiwan Relations' page ... with text that is positive and friendly toward us, reflecting the close and amicable partnership between Taiwan and the United States," the statement read.

The U.S. government fact sheet says that it expects "differences to be resolved by peaceful means, free from coercion, in a manner acceptable to the people on both sides."

While the US does not recognize Taiwan as a country, it is the island's strongest backer and biggest arms supplier.

The Taiwanese government is apprehensive of Trump's stance towards Taiwan who seems less of a supporter than his predecessor Joe Biden.

Trump has also said that he would like to bring the semiconductor manufacturing business back to the US from Taiwan, the leading maker of such chips.

Seeing as we rely on semi-conductors from Taiwan for computers, Trump's gambit to purchase Greenland with its large deposits of trace minerals that can be used to make them here, let's hope the issues with the Taiwan Staits can be resolved without military conflict.
