Indonesia’s Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano on Flores Island has erupted in a display of explosive power, sending ash clouds soaring 16 kilometers (about 53,000 feet) into the sky. The eruption, which began Thursday evening, has only intensified, with pyroclastic flows extending up to 3.3 kilometers from the summit. This eruption is not only a natural disaster but a growing crisis, and local officials have raised the alert level to its highest, urging thousands of residents within an 8- kilometer radius to evacuate immediately.

Seismic tremors had been warning of the impending eruption, with hundreds of recorded earthquakes shaking the region. These earthquakes served as a precursor to the violent eruption that has now led to lava flows and glowing avalanches, visible for miles. The eruption’s intensity has prompted the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center to issue urgent warnings to aircraft, urging them to avoid the affected airspace due to the massive ash plumes.

While no injuries have been reported yet, the local population is grappling with heavy ashfall, which is severely affecting visibility and air quality. Emergency response teams are in place to assist evacuees, but the threat remains high as the situation evolves. The Lewotobi Laki- Laki volcano, part of a twin volcanic system, has a history of powerful eruptions, making this event one that international authorities are closely watching.
