To Advance Normalization of Diplomatic Ties Between the Two Nuclear Superpowers It’s hard to stomach the gleeful reports in the USAID-media openly celebrating the difficulties faced by the Trump team in getting Russians and Ukrainians to agree to a cease-fire and subsequent negotiations for a permanent peace settlement.

While the obstacles for a peace in Ukraine are very real, the wider détente between the two nuclear powers, US and Russia, is advancing – and that’s consequential progress.
Reports have arisen that Vladimir Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev is to visit Washington this week, to hold a meeting with Trump representative Steven Witkoff.
If confirmed, Dmitriev will be the first senior Russian official to visit Washington since the onset of the war in 2022.

Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of Russia's sovereign wealth fund and key Putin ally, received a temporary sanctions lift to meet with Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff as peace talks accelerate.
The Harvard-educated Dmitriev previously helped secure American teacher Marc Fogel's release from Russian prison - described as a "goodwill gesture" toward the Trump administration.
This diplomatic breakthrough comes despite Trump's recent frustration with Putin, who he claims is "dragging their feet" on peace talks.
