It looks like a tail rotor blade separated and shook the tail boom off the aircraft, making autorotation impossible.

BREAKING - Victims of the Hudson River helicopter crash have been identified as Siemens Spain CEO Agustin Escobar, his wife, and their three children. The family arrived from Barcelona Thursday. The pilot has yet to be identified.

Looks like a variant of a Bell Long Ranger. It had emergency floats on the skids, I think about all helos operating in NYC have to be so equipped.

Not many open spaces to autorotate into.
