One thing most people do not realize is the Iran has been a hotbed of upheaval since the ouster of the lawfully elected Prime Minister Mossadegh in 1955 and the installation of Shah Reza Pahlavi.

All of that came to an end in the 1979 student uprising with the storming of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and the capture of the entire staff along with its Marine guards.

Jimmy Carter tried to send in Seal Team 6 but two of the choppers crashed in the desert and the mission was aborted.

The Tehran hostage crisis was finally ended after Ronald Reagan took office in 1981. ;)
