For the first time in history, an American cardinal has been elected pope. Robert Francis Prevost, a Chicago-born cleric, emerged victorious from the 2025 papal conclave, securing the necessary votes to become the 267th leader of the Catholic Church. He has chosen the name Pope Leo XIV, aligning himself with a lineage of popes known for strong leadership and doctrinal clarity.

The election concluded after two days of voting, with 133 cardinal electors casting ballots inside the Sistine Chapel. At 6:10 p.m. local time, white smoke billowed from the chapel chimney, signaling that a new pope had been chosen. The crowd in St. Peter’s Square erupted in cheers, as bells rang across Vatican City, marking the historic moment.

Prevost’s rise to the papacy is unprecedented. The Catholic Church has long resisted electing a U.S.-born pope, wary of the geopolitical influence America wields. However, Prevost’s extensive experience in Peru, where he served as a missionary and later as an archbishop, helped broaden his appeal among the College of Cardinals. His leadership of the Dicastery for Bishops, overseeing the appointment of bishops worldwide, further solidified his reputation as a thoughtful and pragmatic leader.

The new pope’s ideological stance is complex. While he is considered a centrist, his positions on social issues lean progressive, mirroring the approach of Pope Francis, who championed migrants and the poor. However, Prevost has opposed the ordination of women as deacons, signaling a more conservative stance on church doctrine. His leadership will likely balance reform with tradition, as the Vatican navigates modern challenges while preserving its core theological principles.

The election of an American pope marks a turning point for the Catholic Church. With 1.4 billion members worldwide, the institution faces growing secularization, internal divisions, and geopolitical pressures. Pope Leo XIV’s tenure will be closely watched, as he seeks to unite the faithful, strengthen global engagement, and address the evolving challenges of the 21st century

The best years of the popes was when there were three popes who each excommunicated the other two.

Lucretia and Caesar Borgia were the children of Pope Alexander VI. In Rome they call juvenile delinguents, sons of the Pope. They were Jewish.

The popes' mistresses were not above murder to get their bastard a favored seat.
