The supreme leader attended the impressive unveiling of the 5,000-tonne vessel at Cheongjin Shipyard on May 21, which quickly went awry due to an unfortunate blunder during the launch process. Intended as a demonstration of military might, confusion ensued when the sequence was mishandled. An early release of the stern sled resulted in it getting jammed, causing the front of the ship to become lodged and inflicting damage to the hull. This brought the operation to a humiliating halt. Kim Jong-un, having observed the entire catastrophe first-hand, fiercely criticised those handling the event and immediately looked to make reprisals. The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Chongjin Shipyard He lambasted the occurrence as a "serious accident that could not have happened, could not be tolerated," and branded it as a "criminal act caused by pure carelessness, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism." The North Korean leader made it abundantly clear that those responsible for the blunder, including high-ranking officials from various state and party institutions, would face severe repercussions, the Mirror US reports. Kim Jong-un has issued a stern warning that those accountable will face repercussions when the ruling party's Central Committee convenes next month, declaring they will "not avoid being dealt with." He underscored that the restoration of the destroyer is not merely about fixing a vessel but is also tied to the revival of national pride. Kim called on the workforce at Chongjin and Rajin Shipyards to exhibit "ardent patriotic loyalty and labor devotion" in order to ensure the ship is fully repaired before the June Plenary Meeting. Furthermore, he dispensed "important instructions" to the team investigating the accident, underlining the serious manner in which the regime regards this matter.
