While the shelter belts were important for land in crop production, introduction of the trees, particularly the Eastern Red Cedar, have been a negative for the remaining native prairie. Less than 5% of North America's native tall grass prairie remains and we are losing it to the trees. It's only through the use of controlled burns that the largest stand in the Flint Hills of Kansas is fighting back. As we lose the prairie we are losing the plants and animals that evolved on the prairie, including the prairie chicken and prairie flowers that are important to migratory birds, butterflies, and other insects.(Comment from site.
