These earthquake swarms underneath a volcano indicate a possible volcano inbound.
Also a swarm off the coast of Japan and at Campi Flegrei, in Italy.
An earthquake swarm is currently occurring beneath Mount Ruapehu in New Zealand. The swarm has been detected under the volcano, with small earthquakes occurring every six to seven minutes. Such seismic swarms are not unusual in the central North Island, where volcanic fluids interact with pre-existing faults.
The activity has been ongoing since April 26, with seismic swarms indicating small rock-fracturing events being rare at the volcano in recent years.
Additionally, the temperature of the crater lake has risen since mid- April from 25 to 40°C, although no other parameters have changed significantly.
Geonet has stated that the current observations are not considered sufficient to change the Volcanic Alert Level, which remains at 1.
