Prior to boarding my flight to the LA conference, I had my first encounter with our new post-9-11 "security" regime. It was not a happy one.

You see, I, unknowingly, was in the possession of illegal contraband. I had neglected to remove from my key chain a fearsome terrorist weapon. But for the diligence of our "protectors," I would have boarded the flight with this dangerous weapon on my person. Thankfully, "security" thwarted another potential 9-11-in-progress when they detected and then confiscated it. Here is the "weapon" the U.S. government could not permit me to keep:

Curiously, the new "security" regime allows our "protectors" to just take stuff. The effect is no different than a mugging. The only way I could keep this handy tool was to reverse course, leave the "secured" area, track down an envelope and stamp, mail it to myself and then resubmit to the ridiculously invasive and insulting "security" checks all over again. This I was tempted to do, just on principle, until...

A bull-dyke with a bad attitude (she looked like a character from a bad women's prison movie) proceeded to rifle through my luggage. She made a point to finger everything at least once (gross) as she glared at me menacingly. Then, she ran my luggage through the X-ray one more time for good measure. This creep-out took about 20 minutes.

After that, I was done. I wasn't about to submit to this insanity again merely recover my confiscated property.

So, on this July 4th, remember to celebrate the death of our Bill of Rights and be thankful that you too are systematically treated like convicted criminals by your government without cause. The signers of the Declaration, needless to say, are spinning in their graves. (1 image)

What the heck is that (obvious) WMD that you were carrying?

And besides taking over aircraft, what is its purpose in life?

Thanks.

It's a handy multi-tool that hangs (and looks) like a key on your keychain. It has a short strait and serrated blade, a phillips (or flat head) screw driver of various sizes, a bottle opener, etc. Very handy, inconspicuous and, apparently....lethal.

Thanks.

Against all good judgement, I'm flying to DesMoines 12 July: if you guys never hear from me again, know that things went badly over a pocket knife, a lighter, or who knows what item that I carry.

I haven't even started on what happened to me on the way back on Monday the 26th, or my thoughts on the city of LA and LAX in general.

No kidding.

My experience at LAX in the dead of night was positive compared to the nuthouse at KCI. Of course, I was Utili-key-less by then.

Perhaps the night shift is a bit more LAX (no pun intended). LOL.

So, what did they do to you, Kamala?

First off, I got almost an hour tour of the Shantytown city call LA. What a run down pile it is. Blocks and blocks and blocks of homeless living all over the streets, parks, lots, sidewalks. The shuttle driver gave me a good look and info on what is happening in LA and in Calif. in general.

Why the heck isn't the next conference held in Austin, or DesMoines - or someplace that hasn't totally imploded yet?

I know I'm going to catch some flack from the people from Calif. Don't get me wrong, the coast, the northern area and some parts of the valley are beautiful, but the Chicago area just blows it in the weeds.

I had a headache for almost 4 days because of the smog and haze. The immigration has overwhelmed the area. In LA, the shops and such close very early. I've never seen places close this early except like in small southern towns. A regular meal in a resturant that is $7.00 here, is $15.00 there. Its dirty, hot, the water is horrible, businesses don't run their air conditioning.

I would love to come to Austin. I talked to Bill and Christine about this, and the next event that AJ puts on, I'll be coming down.

I still haven't commented on LAX or United Airlines yet.

You need to have a set of these lovely prints in your shirt pocket when going through security.

It DOES get noticed.

Mark, you and I both had headaches and the food situation in the area of downtown LA where we were was pathetic. I was appalled at how dirty it was too. However, I've been to LA enough to know that just a couple blocks north and west, it's like a different world. Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Westwood, Santa Monica, etc are beautiful and clean. As a matter of fact, the grounds surrounding LAX is lushly landscaped and well maintained as I'm sure you noticed. I'll tell you though, Austin looked a lot prettier to me when I got home after having been there for 4 days.

Planting a few shrubs is like putting a bow on a pig or a bandaid on an arm missing. The mayor of LA was in Chicago recently with mayor Daley and I'm sure Richie was explaining to him how to get things done. Wether legal or not.

LAX is a nasty, dirty, disorganized, run down crack house. Gang writing, broken facilities, hot, very crowded. It needs to be totally renovated.

United Airlines is next on my hit list.
