A retired Navy commander and local outspoken tax protestor was sentenced to seven years in prison Thursday for a crime that Senior U.S. District Judge Lacey Collier said “goes directly to the heart of the existence of our country.”

Dr. Ward Dean, 63, of Pensacola also was ordered to pay nearly $300,000 in taxes that were assessed on the $1.3 million income he earned between 1997 and 2002 but never paid.

“If we have no one complying with the accepted and long-established tax code, we would have anarchy and we would have no country,” Collier said in imposing the sentence, which was more than double the sentencing guidelines’ maximum imprisonment of nearly 3 1/2 years.

Dean, a retired Navy flight surgeon, was convicted in December of six counts of tax evasion and one count of attempting to obstruct the Internal Revenue Service in the collection of taxes.

This f**king witch must know very little about the Founding of our country. We've had "a country" [void of anarchy..lol] long before her "tax code" was established.

Somebody get a fucking rope for this tyrant bitch.

The stupid bitch should get the IRS to follow the law in the first place and we would not have the mess we do today.

When government and police fail to follow the law, the result is anarchy. We have it in spades.

We need more rope!

I don't mind paying taxes, and I don't see anyway around them, but there is a diferenece between a total tax load of 3% (which is what it should be) and about 50%, which is what most people pay.

I heard an advisement on the radio yesterday from a lawyer who deals with people who can't pay their taxes and so haven't filed returns for years. It reminded of a guy I met who couldn't pay his taxes, so he just quit filing. The IRS caught him after 15 years, and settled for $700. After all, the guy had absolutely nothing. What were they going to do? Put him inm prison, which costs, what? $20,000 a year.

Apparently there are a lot of people who can no longer pay their taxes. How can anyone, when the tax burden is so crushing?
