A retired Navy commander and local outspoken tax protestor was sentenced to seven years in prison Thursday for a crime that Senior U.S. District Judge Lacey Collier said “goes directly to the heart of the existence of our country.”

Dr. Ward Dean, 63, of Pensacola also was ordered to pay nearly $300,000 in taxes that were assessed on the $1.3 million income he earned between 1997 and 2002 but never paid.

“If we have no one complying with the accepted and long-established tax code, we would have anarchy and we would have no country,” Collier said in imposing the sentence, which was more than double the sentencing guidelines’ maximum imprisonment of nearly 3 1/2 years.

Dean, a retired Navy flight surgeon, was convicted in December of six counts of tax evasion and one count of attempting to obstruct the Internal Revenue Service in the collection of taxes.

So, the existence of our country, is solely to collect taxes on the backs of the laboring citizens of this nation?

This doesn't go to the heart of our nation, not one bit. I think if she were to look at her words and see how ridiculous it sounds, she might change her tune.

If our nation were developed with the express sole purpose of generating revenue for the world bank, the IMF, and any and all banking institutions, I sincerely doubt a revolution would have been fought for it.

We dumped a shipload of tea into the Boston harbor for a 1 percent tax on it. I hardly think that our nation was founded as a system of laws directed at stealing the wealth of its citizenry.

ELECTION 2000, Day 33 Judge orders Florida's military votes counted Ruling: 'All federal write-in ballots rejected for the above stated reasons are declared valid'

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted: December 9, 2000 1:00 a.m. Eastern

In a victory for Republican George W. Bush, a U.S. district judge yesterday ordered all Florida counties to reexamine discarded military absentee ballots and to count them in final vote totals if they were properly signed and dated.

The Bush campaign had sued five Florida counties for discarding the ballots initially because they did not have a postmark when they arrived.

However, U.S. District Judge Lacey Collier, in a 28-page ruling issued Friday, ordered the canvassing boards in those counties to accept some absentee ballots that were previously rejected by local elections officials.
