That has got to rank as the #1 pastorally cute nature shot series of the year!

"To wield onself -- to use oneself as a tool in one's own hand -- and so to make or break that which no one else can build or ruin -- THAT is the greatest pleasure known to man! To one who has felt the chisel in his hand and set free the angel prisoned in the marble block, or to one who has felt sword in hand and set homeless the soul that a moment before lived in the body of his mortal enemy -- to those both come alike the taste of that rare food spread only for demons or for gods." -- Gordon R. Dickson, "Soldier Ask Not"

How on earth did we ever assign the term "dumb" animals to such stately creatures ?

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds (smites) you; and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

Samuel Adams ... and I concur !

I find that horses, knotheads as they are, tend to be very aware of the other animals around them.

I noticed the horses over here were hanging around the barn for a bit longer than usual so I went over to investigate.

I found a sick tom cat in the end stall with the one mare standing over him. It seemed as if the cat had distemper and would not respond to my poking it with the toe of my boot. It seemed to be in pain so I went and got the .22 and put it out of its misery.

It just seems like the horses knew the cat was sick.

Thanks for pinging me, Chrissie. I had the delightful privilege of seeing these pics a few days ago at one of the 'horsey' sites that I visit. Incredible then, and still incredible.

Animals always intrigue me. We had a female cat who spooked when we moved her kittens out of a wall, so I thought I'd have to raise baby kittens. The vet had bottles and queen's milk......but the kicker was that I would have to stimulate the babies to urinate and defecate! He asked if we had an ol bitch dog; that they oftentimes will show a matronly streak and handle such matters.

Well, we didn't.......but we had an intact male dog that while gentle as a lamb with children could be rough on adult or 'unwanted' critters.

Turns out that Bear dog became a surrogate 'Mom'......he would have those babies wet from ear to tail. He was really seriously about keeping them clean--from end to end. So long as I fed the bottles, he'd handle the rest!

A few days later Mom cat returned and took over the bottle business, but Bear kept cleaning the babies!

Whew. I thought the horse gave birth to the deerlet in some sort of hideous DNA experiment gone wrong!

But this constitution in time will fail, as all such efforts do. And it will fail because of the corruption of the people, in a general sense.' And that is what it has come to now, exactly as Franklin predicted." -- Gore Vidal

*ugh*, I'll take your word for it. I watch the little Bambi's play outside in my backyard every day, I can't eat that!

I'm busier than hell at work, but I'm fixing to take a well deserved vacation from every one and every critter the first week of August and drive myself out to Colorado for a week. I'm going to go torment my Bush Loving parents.

It's alright. Too dry for me. I find this part of the country much prettier though. More trees.

Very sweet.

Deer are comfy around horses and cows so, the mother would return to the fawn unless she was killed by a car or a predator.

People who find fawns may think they are abandoned, but they usually aren't. The best thing to do is simply leave them.

The reason they have no scent and camo spots is to protect them while Mom is out getting the groceries that she processes into milk.
