The Gods

An honest God is the Noblest Work of Man.

Each nation has created a god, and the god has always resembled his creators. He hated and loved what they hated and loved, and he was invariably found on the side of those in power. Each god was intensely patriotic, and detested all nations but his own. All these gods demanded praise, flattery, and worship. Most of them were pleased with sacrifice, and the smell of innocent blood has ever been considered a divine perfume. All these gods have insisted upon having a vast number of priests, and the priests have always insisted upon being supported by the people, and the principal business of these priests has been to boast about their god, and to insist that he could easily vanquish all the other gods put together.

So begins Ingersoll's great piece, which is a pleasure to read aloud.

Ingersoll's focus later in the piece is the Bible, and Christianity, IMO one of the religions least deserving of criticism.

His first sentence -- "Each nation has created a god, and the god has always resembled his creators" -- is very powerful. He then proceeds to discuss commonalities.

But his premise is just as powerful in the illumination of differences between the peoples of the book, in the ways they relate to themselves and to others.

The United States began as a white nation and therefore has a white god. I don't think this is an accurate representation of the Almighty, but the "culture war" on the right is all about getting back to the white "values and lifestyle" of the 1950s. I am not saying that wouldn't be a good thing, but I don't think it is possible.

That's because we are rapidly approaching a point in our demographics that there won't be enough "real (i.e., white) Americans" left to even care about the white god.

The U.S. for my entire lifetime has not been a Christian nation in terms of the dominant culture, but rather a Judeo-Christian one, with the emphasis on the Judeos.

That's why our leaders are what I call "Old Testament Christians." They profess to love everybody, but kill anyone who won't "do business" (IOW, bend over to be screwed without lube) with our transnational corporate and banking elites.

Ironically, the Judeos are also one of the main reasons we can't go back to the 1950s lifestyle. The secular Judeos went to the Frankfurt School and are Fabian Socialists.

ingersoll is referring to what the gnostics have termed the 'archons'

these are entitites which pose as 'god' or 'gods' but are extremely negatively polarized, and in fact, do demand blood sacrifice, etc, the same as 'jehovah' of the old testament, who was many believe a babylonian war diety. michael tsarion refers to them as 'the macrobes'...

any christian or other religious person who confuses the Source of all with these archons is lining themselves up with evil.

one might ask: why are now christians who believe in such things acting crazy.

my response is that one has to be crazy to believe that the source of love and compassion is the same entity as one who is bent on revenge, murder and blood sacrifice.

I've not read the entire work, but this exerpt sounds like it could have been written by someone like William S Burroughs as a thinly disguised analogy to The State.

The President is always right. Sheesh.

Quit bogarting that peace, Herbert!
