Title: 4um's "Original" Skin Modified

The "Original" skin for 4um, in place since 4um first went live, has been modified.

The purpose of the modification was to bring the old look in line with the revised art/style instituted with the very sophisticated "brushed" look, and I think we've succeeded. However, we also hope that the changes preserve the advantage of the original skin in being useful for those who might have a screen resolution smaller than 1024x768, or who otherwise prefer not to have the browser window fill their entire computer screen. With the original skin, you can shrink the width of the browser window without having the dreaded left/right scroll bar appear at the bottom.

Feedback is welcome. Thank you. Subscribe to *4um Admin News*

actually, it's peach, the same color as the title box on the latest comments page. it just looks darker when it's the whole page. hey, at least you'll know for sure that you're sending private mail. ;)

i much prefer our artistic and stylish brushed format which is center justified, rather than left justified, to this one, so back to it for me.

I'm sooooooo glad I didn't get pissed off right off the bat! I couldn't believe it when after I logged in, I was still seeing the new (vs the original original). Did a real double take, so just picked a different skin name and eventually got back what I wanted.

Reality tells us y'all ain't gonna whack us without at least a discussion, or even just a plain old ordinary decree.

I have been reading since I was the age of 4. From the first day, the page was white, the text was black. The only thing artsy fartsy stuff does to a text page is make it harder to read. Does anyone else here wear glasses?

Other than that, I like orange, and love peaches.

I'm sooooooo glad I didn't get pissed off right off the bat!

Yes, I hate it when that happens too. I much prefer 5 or 10 minutes warning. ;^)

On a more serious note, if you are saying that you chose the skin called "New Original" to get back to the true original with the yellow and blue banner, please know that the plan is to discontinue it. I created the "New Original" skin as a workplace to develop the new skin, and when christine gave me the word, I switched the "Original" with the "New Original" so that everyone using the "Original" would suddenly see the new work. So what's now called "New Original" is the soon to be discontinued skin.

The hope is that the new art will be satisfactory to everyone preferring a lower resolution screen and/or browser window not maxed out, while bringing it in line with the trademark art that christine has gone through a lot of trouble to create for this site.

So any detailed comments on particulars on the new skin are appreciated. I'm using it myself to look for any pesky issues.

For whomever is the puter genius at 4um.

Perhaps the print at bottom of this page could be a tad larger????

ie HOME thru REGISTER

Everything else is fine. That print is a mite small for these tired old eyes and bottle bottom glasses.

If this will put me on the constant whiner list, please put it in very small print as I do not want people to know I whine a lot.

Neil can adjust that easily. I'm happy to oblige. Which browser do you use? I use Maxthon (IE) and I have my fonts on Large. You might try that too and see if it makes a difference.

Well the left/right scroll problem is eliminated, that's kewl. And I appreciate the black-on-white text contrast :)

But...

Under IE most of the text fonts don't resize, except for the lines:

"Member Subscription Setup"
and
"Please report web page problems, questions and comments to webmaster2@freedom4um.com"

which suggest to me that all the fonts can be resizable if they were to be specified in the same technique as the above two lines.

As a matter of personal preference, I find the default font size too large, (seems 50-75% larger than the real original font) and everything appears bold. Let me know if you'd like to see an image of how it appears to me.

Can you knock the default font size down a peg (or maybe two until they aren't bold) and make them all resizeable?

(yeah, I know, $!@#*&&$!@# users - they're never happy)

Those lines on the new skin are not sized with css styles, but by straight HTML, so those need to be brought up to speed. (Thanks for the catch).

My linux firefox does change css font sizes with the "increase text size" command. Maybe MSIE isn't so accommodating.

I'm happy to change that but I'm puzzled as I'm seeing them the same size and see no reason why they should be different from one another. Can you verify for me the exact webpage where you see them different sizes?

And you are viewing the new skin where the background is pure white and the red 4um banner spans the entire top of your browser?

It's no problem. I appreciate the feedback.

This is at bottom page when I am replying...

However the actual print is prolly half or less of what I copy and paste here.

I do not understand how it can be tiny when I copy and be this size when I paste????

The same line at the top of each page is in white and prolly four times the size of the line at bottom in black.

Okay, you're not using the new skin. You're using the "Brushed" skin as only that one has the top nav links in white.. I took a peak and you're on the "Brushed 90%" which is the default. You can change "skins" on the setup page (linked on the nav bar). It might interest you to try the other skins.

Yes, the font at the bottom is much smaller than it is at the top. It's been that way since it was created. If it should be changed it's never too late.

Yes, when you cut n paste it into the comment box, the font changes. That's normal. The font is usually/never not copied when you cut n paste to a web page.

Thank you..

Took me a long time to goad Robinson into banning me for good. All it took was truth and facts.

We both knew that FR was owned and operated by "others" and that innocent people were being misled. I so badly wanted him to do the banning, not the "lackeys" and he obliged.

There is a sad part to both FR and LP and that is there are good people on both sites that are so intimidated they dare not speak their minds. Try as I might I could not get them to speak up.

You haven't indicated what the goal is with fonts and sizes, so I'm not sure whether you're working on this or are done.

In general I see no reason text fonts/sizes under the "original" skin should be any different than under the Brushed skins.

The Brushed fonts/sizes are much more readable. Again I offer to post images of the two formats if that will help you to visualize the problem.

When we worked on the fonts on the phone, we made them to be the same as the Brushed. That was my goal. I don't understand where/why they're looking different to you as on my computers they look very close or the same. Hopefully, you and Neil can figure it out. ;)

Yes, please do. Thanks.

Also, as you know there are 2 brushed skins and each uses a different measure for fonts. One (the 90%) uses "em" and the other (high res) uses "px" for pixel.

That can confuse matters some as far as comparing the new skin to the old.
