WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush presided over a citizenship ceremony on Monday for three soldiers injured in Iraq, calling them "men who knew the cost of freedom and were willing to pay that cost so others could live free."

Bush also used his visit to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center to promote his stalled proposal for overhauling the nation's immigration laws. He urged Congress to break the current stalemate and pass legislation that "must be comprehensive."

The three injured soldiers who took the oath and became citizens were Spc. Noe Santos-Dilone of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Spc. Sergio Lopez of Bowlingbrook, Ill.; and Pfc. Eduardo Leal-Cardenas of Los Angeles.

Santos, who stood on crutches while the other two were standing on their own at the ceremony, was injured last Sept. 6 when the convoy in which he was riding was bombed. Lopez was injured when his Humvee was hit by a roadside bomb south of Baghdad last Jan. 6. Leal-Cardenas was injured by a roadside bomb last Dec. 6 while returning to his base from a mission just south of Baghdad.

Bush called it, "a joyful day for these men, a joyful day for me to be here with them...It's a privilege to be their commander in chief."

"This isn't going to be the first time these men have made such a promise. They took a similar oath when they became soldiers of the United States Army. And their presence here bears witness that they kept their word so that others might be free," Bush said.

"As our nation debates the future of our immigration policies, we must remember the contribution of these good men and all who dream of contributing to this country's future," Bush said.

After the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, Bush signed an executive order making foreign-born members of the U.S. military immediately eligible for U.S. citizenship when they serve on active duty.

Bowlingbrook [sic], Ill.

Rapidly darkening.

The Bolingbrook man is now undergoing physical therapy to learn how to walk on prosthetic legs.

All things considered, wouldn't it save time, money, and melanin to mine the border?

Army Public Affairs says:

Originally from Mexico, he grew up in Bowlingbrook[sic], Ill.

Pfc. Eduardo Leal-Cardenas is also originally from Mexico

Spc. Noe Santos-Dilone was injured while serving as part of a personnel protection detail in Iraq, when his vehicle was hit by an explosively formed projectile triggered by laser. Bush first met Santos-Dilone at this year’s National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast.

That's a new one to me.

"I was working the rope line. He grabbed my hand, and he said, 'I'm not a citizen of the United States and I want to be one.' Now, here's a man who knows how to take it directly to the top. I'm proud to be here when he gets sworn in."

Dominican Today reports:

Dominican Noe Santos Dilone...

Lopez was the only one in need of crotches [sic] to stand during the citizenship ceremony.

The oath was also taken by another Hispanic, Emilio González, Citizenship and Immigration Services, Internal Security Department director.

NY Newsday had a little fun with this:

WASHINGTON - At an event linking the most sensitive domestic and foreign policy issues currently before the White House - immigration and the war in Iraq - President George W. Bush attended a ceremony yesterday at which three wounded soldiers, including one from Brooklyn, were given U.S. citizenship.

He also signed legislation blocking condominium associations from prohibiting residents from flying the U.S. flag.

Thanks for adding information on this disgrace. I understand app. 33,000 non American citizens are currently in the military. BTW, when was the last photo op Bush did with American kids? He and his band of Hessians bite.

This sounds more like a 'friendly fire' incident! I thought the 'enemy' only had roadside bombs with nails and nuts and bolts......
