A plot to blow up planes in flight from the UK to the US and commit "mass murder on an unimaginable scale" has been disrupted, Scotland Yard has said. It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled in hand luggage on to as many as 10 aircraft.

Poster Comment:

The "plot" was that they would carry liquids aboard, mix them in flight, then detonate them.

Joe Lieberman, where are you when we need you???

It smells to me.

I read small note on this subject that all people were "homegrown" Brits.

Somehow I do not think the bad guys would trust such aa affair to "foreigners".

From Reuters:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government raised the security alert on passenger planes to its highest level for the first time on Thursday after Britain said it had foiled a plot to blow up flights to the United States.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said it was taking an unprecedented step by raising the threat level for commercial flights originating in the United Kingdom to "severe," or red.

The threat level for all other commercial aircraft operating in or destined for the United States would be raised to "high," or orange, from "elevated," or yellow, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in a statement.

The threat level for the country as a whole remained at yellow, according to the department's Web site.

Homeland Security took immediate steps that included barring passengers from carrying liquids, including beverages, hair gels and lotions, on planes. It said travelers in both countries should expect long delays. (emphasis added)

A British police source said the plot was believed to involve a "liquid chemical" device.

"Over the last few hours, British authorities have arrested a significant number of extremists engaged in a substantial plot to destroy multiple passenger aircraft flying from the United Kingdom to the United States," the statement released by the DHS press office said.

I'm very suspicious about this whole "gel bomber" affair. Apparently nothing was set to happen today (i.e., they didn't catch anyone trying to get on a plane with bombs, etc). So why the big side show? Why TODAY? Why stopping all the air traffic the way they have? Maybe there was some kind of plot, but I think the real intent here is to cause panic among the masses to justify the Bush/Blair War on Terror. I'm just sick of this hysteria they're always trying to generate.

Nothing's gone down as of late in the 'West' and as to keep the hate agenda on the back burner warm, a little psy-op has to take place. Plus we don't know what the PTB have line up in the near future so as to point the finger at Muslims. Thing is , what would carrying out such an attack achieve anyway? How would it benefit anybody's cause? What would the perp hope to achieve? Would it make western governments and their policies change? No. The people there to cower in fear? No. The people to be angry against Muslims? Yes.(and to believe via the TV that they're bloodthirsty, unreasoning maniacs, hellbent on murdering people and themselves) To make future attacks on Iran/Syria easier on the senses and slide into place? Yes. To subtley tune into 911 via the aeroplane conection? Yes. (great timing there again with those recent movies BTW!)

George Orwell spelled it all out in 1984, simple as that. (Not forgetting of course that this diverts (most) people's and the media's attention away from the murder going down in Lebanon.)

...but should distract us away from Hizzbollah mopping the floor with the IDF...

A more interesting side query to that comment is how the hell did Hezbollah all of the sudden come up with what to all outside appearances seems to be the best fighting force fielded by Islamics since Saladin?

Typically, Islamic forces (somewhat excepting mountain people in Chechnya and Afghanistan) have always displayed indifference to anything resembling logical strategic and tactical doctrine when engaging western forces (If you want to see the most ridiculous example of this there is some after action reporting by the Pakistani military on their second war with India that reads like a comedy from a military doctrine standpoint. So and so displeased Allah by partaking in spirits and women and was therefore defeated etc...). More often than not, local victory was won through incompetence of the opposition, or the propensity of the Islamic side to perservere without thought to the cost in materials or bodies.

All of the sudden you have a force of several brigades size that is innovative, doesn't waste lives, and knows how to put limited resources to maximum use. They particularly appear to show an enhanced ability to operate with a high level of initiative and autonomy in small units.

The politics of the conflict aside, I've always thought that constant low grade warfare without conclusion (which I believe is fostered by international finacial interests) was a very poor long term strategy for the western world because it exposes the opposition to exist under high intensity, long term, selective pressure that makes them better. We are probably seeing the results of this here.

The downside is that it is going to put pressure on the Israelis and the US to conclude conflicts with much greater levels of destruction and to definitely poke and prod Iran into doing something that allows us to pound them hard without suffering from public backlash...

"To wield onself -- to use oneself as a tool in one's own hand -- and so to make or break that which no one else can build or ruin -- THAT is the greatest pleasure known to man! To one who has felt the chisel in his hand and set free the angel prisoned in the marble block, or to one who has felt sword in hand and set homeless the soul that a moment before lived in the body of his mortal enemy -- to those both come alike the taste of that rare food spread only for demons or for gods." -- Gordon R. umm, having just seen the film V for Vendetta i have serious doubts about how true this alert really is and even if it was real i'm deeply suspicious about how it is used as propaganda :(

even BBC Radio 4 News (who are given quite abit of respect for not following government lines) openly asked an MP to comment on why people no longer believe the officials - specially after the "accidental" killing on the underground and the bungled raid when a man was shot but nothing terrorist was found (they are prosecuting him for paedophilic pornography they "found" on his computer).

the sad thing for me is that if the people lose confidence in their government and its officials' sincerity, this can only end in tears - another "incident" (real or orchestrated) where innocent civilians are killed and injured.

we are truly in the hands of thieves and fools :(

excellent insight, JT, that hadn't occurred to me. The timing of this "gel bomber" alert (my attempt to name this incident) makes one wonder as nothing actually happened, and it appears they caught these people before anything happened. So the logical question is: why the dog and pony show and why NOW?

It's a pretty good sample of the level of fighting with an Iranian ground war, for their training and the determination of Hizzbollah.

The $250M war games a few years ago had to be repeatedly rigged in order for the US Navy to win battle scenarios.
