A plot to blow up planes in flight from the UK to the US and commit "mass murder on an unimaginable scale" has been disrupted, Scotland Yard has said. It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled in hand luggage on to as many as 10 aircraft.

Poster Comment:

The "plot" was that they would carry liquids aboard, mix them in flight, then detonate them.

Joe Lieberman, where are you when we need you???

I'm very suspicious about this whole "gel bomber" affair. Apparently nothing was set to happen today (i.e., they didn't catch anyone trying to get on a plane with bombs, etc). So why the big side show? Why TODAY? Why stopping all the air traffic the way they have? Maybe there was some kind of plot, but I think the real intent here is to cause panic among the masses to justify the Bush/Blair War on Terror. I'm just sick of this hysteria they're always trying to generate.

Why TODAY?

You ask why? Haven't you been following world affairs.......Sore Loserman loses on Tuesday, dickhead announces on wednesday that this is encouragement to the terrorists, and now on thursday.....VIOLA!

There they are--all 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, or so!

Damned...somebody screwed up big time--how come they were in the uk and not in the usa, or notably in connecticut! Now that is the question....

Hi dee - I guess I just lost track of what was going on - actually I've heard that the terror nonsense was generated by Blair's political problems in the UK - that's why it happened over there. The Lieberman thing probably played a part as well. Obviously there was no immediate threat (on that day) so they did obviously time it for a purpose. I just wish people wouldn't be taken in by this nonsense. Personally I don't know when I'm ever going to fly again - it's becoming far too inconvenient, and who the hell knows if you're gonna get blown up or shot with a missile. Not worth it.

I'm with you re flying............but have been that way for a loooonnnnnng time.

It's been a few years now since my quite elderly dad flew back to the midwest for family visits. I think 2000 was his last one back. And, of course, 911 would have finished it off--September was always when he went back.

Anyhow, it's a 3-1/2 hour trip to the airport from here. And to think they want passengers there 2 hours ahead--presumably to just sit around or stand around til flight time--really put a kibosh to it. Topping that, of course, was that, while I could drop him off in the unloading zone, he would have to stand there until I could circle around the damned parking area, to where you could short term park, and then walk about 1/2 mile back to the unloading zone.

It's one thing to be a 30 year old man or woman and do this.........it's something else to expect a 90 year old, who needs a walker, to do this.

I never cared for flying myself....my husband always thought it was great. He even liked helicopters. I was always as nervous as a whore in church when I flew. Guess that goes back to the 1950s when my grandmother, bless her heart, missed her flight...........it crashed over/around the Grand Canyon.

#127. To: rowdee, all (#126) (Edited)

I almost crashed once - we lost one engine and the other was going out. we emergency landed at Dover Airforce base. Funny thing is - I KNEW that the engine was going to go out. I just had that feeling, and sure enough.

I don't expect to be flying anywhere for many many years. I just won't put up with it. There's nothing I want to see that bad. This security stuff is nonsense.

You know, for all the raving they've been doing over the past week about terror plots to mix various ordinary household liquids into bombs aboard planes, I have yet to see anyone who can actually tell me if it's actually POSSIBLE to do this stuff. Make bombs out of peroxide and nail polish remover and igniting them with MP3 players? This all sounds crazy to me. Of course we can see that the timing was rigged, but I have to question the basic premise. Is there anyone here with sufficient chemical knowledge to say whether this stuff is even possible?

Sounds like a bunch of horseshit to me. I guess if you try to look it up on the web though, they can make out you're some kind of terrorist for trying to look up "recipes"...

I'm with ya, mehitable.

I forgot to mention the grope and paw bullshit that I refuse to be a party to at the airports.

And the last time my Dad flew, there was the usual 'no unticketed people' beyond this line--meaning you couldn't go all the way to the gate to see your loved one/whomever off.

Well, my Dad uses a wheelchair once we get inside a terminal (otherwise, we'd be late for everything :)) The past times I've taken him to the airport, there was airport personnel who would take the wheelchair up thru the elevator system to the second level and see that he got on the plane.

The last time, however, while they indicated someone would take him up, in no time they said I could take him up. So I did.............and once at the second level, we went over and sat down. Before the flight started loading, I went to the person behind the gate and told them my father would need to be loaded early or late, etc. I was questioned as to why I was there. And then in no time, someone else came up and said that I could stay with him and actually push his wheelchair right up to the loading ramp walkway.

Who the hell can deal with this 'now you can" or 'now you can't" bullshit!

And what is so stupid about this is that the whole county where the airport is couldn't have had more than 100,000 people...one of the biggest in Montana!

Really, really stupid.
