A plot to blow up planes in flight from the UK to the US and commit "mass murder on an unimaginable scale" has been disrupted, Scotland Yard has said. It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled in hand luggage on to as many as 10 aircraft.

I'm very suspicious about this whole "gel bomber" affair. Apparently nothing was set to happen today (i.e., they didn't catch anyone trying to get on a plane with bombs, etc). So why the big side show? Why TODAY? Why stopping all the air traffic the way they have? Maybe there was some kind of plot, but I think the real intent here is to cause panic among the masses to justify the Bush/Blair War on Terror. I'm just sick of this hysteria they're always trying to generate.

You ask why? Haven't you been following world affairs.......Sore Loserman loses on Tuesday, dickhead announces on wednesday that this is encouragement to the terrorists, and now on thursday.....VIOLA!

There they are--all 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, or so!

Damned...somebody screwed up big time--how come they were in the uk and not in the usa, or notably in connecticut! Now that is the question....

Hi dee - I guess I just lost track of what was going on - actually I've heard that the terror nonsense was generated by Blair's political problems in the UK - that's why it happened over there. The Lieberman thing probably played a part as well. Obviously there was no immediate threat (on that day) so they did obviously time it for a purpose. I just wish people wouldn't be taken in by this nonsense. Personally I don't know when I'm ever going to fly again - it's becoming far too inconvenient, and who the hell knows if you're gonna get blown up or shot with a missile. Not worth it.

I'm with you re flying............but have been that way for a loooonnnnnng time.

It's been a few years now since my quite elderly dad flew back to the midwest for family visits. I think 2000 was his last one back. And, of course, 911 would have finished it off--September was always when he went back.

Anyhow, it's a 3-1/2 hour trip to the airport from here. And to think they want passengers there 2 hours ahead--presumably to just sit around or stand around til flight time--really put a kibosh to it. Topping that, of course, was that, while I could drop him off in the unloading zone, he would have to stand there until I could circle around the damned parking area, to where you could short term park, and then walk about 1/2 mile back to the unloading zone.

It's one thing to be a 30 year old man or woman and do this.........it's something else to expect a 90 year old, who needs a walker, to do this.

I never cared for flying myself....my husband always thought it was great. He even liked helicopters. I was always as nervous as a whore in church when I flew. Guess that goes back to the 1950s when my grandmother, bless her heart, missed her flight...........it crashed over/around the Grand Canyon.

Between the eventual rising price of gasoline (Alaska/Iran or just plain greed), and the misery of waiting for hours in an airport (just to have all your cosmetics thrown into a bin for someone else to sell), they are either telling us to stay home or ride trains/ships/horses. I'll probably stay home too.

There are so many things to be seen within a short driving span. I know when I lived in California, I used to take a map and mark all the places I'd love to see......geeze, just the old Missions could take a year or so.

I've never even had the desire to go to Hawaii or Alaska either. Most of the eastern seaboard states don't interest me (hint, hint NY!)

I have a cousin in California who has spent the past 5 - 6 years (since they got married) on the road. They have a fantastic motor coach and pull a Jeep behind them. All they've done is gone state to state to state. They stop and stay as long as they want, and then go on.

This is their last year of this lifestyle as they are in the process of building a home now. They're not getting rid of the rigs, though, because they still want to travel. It appears Hawaii is out because they can't drive there! LOL.....

We started to do that several years ago. A lot of fun.

At San Juan Bautista, a lovely spot, we learned that the Padres used mustard seed to "mark" El Camino Real. Cool idea, no?

Lucky cousin. Camping along the way would make these fun outings more affordable. My aunt/uncle enjoyed the state park system while they were able.

Cousin and hubby came up here last year.

Seems like they check in at the old homestead physically once a year--get their physicals, blah blah blah, and then head right back out. With cell phones, internet access, banking online and bill paying, a friend to check their mail, they quickly head out for something like a 2 week stay along the Colorado.

Been doing it long enough, they have developed sets of friends who do this same sort of thing. From the way she talked, it is a real hoot. And being able to stay as long as you want in an area in order to really see it and get a feel for the area and the people really adds to it.

Like I said, their motor coach is like home....washer and dryer to boot! And they have a dalmation dog traveling with them.

She said they prefer to stay at area grounds rather than at family homesteads...that way they can visit and also 'see' the area like they want to, without imposing or worrying about being nuisances.

This was really comfortable for me, too, because it had been many, many, many years (like about 40+/-)since I last saw her.

I woulda been content to have lived that way back after the girls got out of school. Gene and I had loved traveling and had always wanted to travel at that time. But then, with the ranch and livestock, and him having to go on dialysis, lifes' desires changed....

Re the Missions..........that was interesting about the mustard seeds.

I used to live several miles from the mission at San Fernando--drove past it lots of times, but never stopped and viewed it. That was during my growing up years, and I guess the parents never thought it important.

However, I was a voracious reader back then and read just about everything I could about the Missions. I'd still love to be able to follow El Camino Real from the mexican border to Frisco........however, it would probably have to be done using a chopper because I couldn't stand to be around all the zillions of people all over so-cal now. Crowds really bother, and that traffic! Forget about it.

Always blew me away to read about all the leather hides, like from Mission San Gabriel, that were loaded on shipped to be taken away for tanning.
