A plot to blow up planes in flight from the UK to the US and commit "mass murder on an unimaginable scale" has been disrupted, Scotland Yard has said. It is thought the plan was to detonate explosive devices smuggled in hand luggage on to as many as 10 aircraft.

Poster Comment:

The "plot" was that they would carry liquids aboard, mix them in flight, then detonate them.

Joe Lieberman, where are you when we need you???

I read small note on this subject that all people were "homegrown" Brits.

Somehow I do not think the bad guys would trust such aa affair to "foreigners".

From Reuters:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government raised the security alert on passenger planes to its highest level for the first time on Thursday after Britain said it had foiled a plot to blow up flights to the United States.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said it was taking an unprecedented step by raising the threat level for commercial flights originating in the United Kingdom to "severe," or red.

The threat level for all other commercial aircraft operating in or destined for the United States would be raised to "high," or orange, from "elevated," or yellow, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in a statement.

The threat level for the country as a whole remained at yellow, according to the department's Web site.

Homeland Security took immediate steps that included barring passengers from carrying liquids, including beverages, hair gels and lotions, on planes. It said travelers in both countries should expect long delays. (emphasis added)

A British police source said the plot was believed to involve a "liquid chemical" device.

"Over the last few hours, British authorities have arrested a significant number of extremists engaged in a substantial plot to destroy multiple passenger aircraft flying from the United Kingdom to the United States," the statement released by the DHS press office said.

I'm very suspicious about this whole "gel bomber" affair. Apparently nothing was set to happen today (i.e., they didn't catch anyone trying to get on a plane with bombs, etc). So why the big side show? Why TODAY? Why stopping all the air traffic the way they have? Maybe there was some kind of plot, but I think the real intent here is to cause panic among the masses to justify the Bush/Blair War on Terror. I'm just sick of this hysteria they're always trying to generate.

Nothing's gone down as of late in the 'West' and as to keep the hate agenda on the back burner warm, a little psy-op has to take place. Plus we don't know what the PTB have line up in the near future so as to point the finger at Muslims. Thing is , what would carrying out such an attack achieve anyway? How would it benefit anybody's cause? What would the perp hope to achieve? Would it make western governments and their policies change? No. The people there to cower in fear? No. The people to be angry against Muslims? Yes.(and to believe via the TV that they're bloodthirsty, unreasoning maniacs, hellbent on murdering people and themselves) To make future attacks on Iran/Syria easier on the senses and slide into place? Yes. To subtley tune into 911 via the aeroplane conection? Yes. (great timing there again with those recent movies BTW!)

George Orwell spelled it all out in 1984, simple as that. (Not forgetting of course that this diverts (most) people's and the media's attention away from the murder going down in Lebanon.)

...but should distract us away from Hizzbollah mopping the floor with the IDF...

A more interesting side query to that comment is how the hell did Hezbollah all of the sudden come up with what to all outside appearances seems to be the best fighting force fielded by Islamics since Saladin?

Typically, Islamic forces (somewhat excepting mountain people in Chechnya and Afghanistan) have always displayed indifference to anything resembling logical strategic and tactical doctrine when engaging western forces (If you want to see the most ridiculous example of this there is some after action reporting by the Pakistani military on their second war with India that reads like a comedy from a military doctrine standpoint. So and so displeased Allah by partaking in spirits and women and was therefore defeated etc...). More often than not, local victory was won through incompetence of the opposition, or the propensity of the Islamic side to perservere without thought to the cost in materials or bodies.

All of the sudden you have a force of several brigades size that is innovative, doesn't waste lives, and knows how to put limited resources to maximum use. They particularly appear to show an enhanced ability to operate with a high level of initiative and autonomy in small units.

The politics of the conflict aside, I've always thought that constant low grade warfare without conclusion (which I believe is fostered by international finacial interests) was a very poor long term strategy for the western world because it exposes the opposition to exist under high intensity, long term, selective pressure that makes them better. We are probably seeing the results of this here.

The downside is that it is going to put pressure on the Israelis and the US to conclude conflicts with much greater levels of destruction and to definitely poke and prod Iran into doing something that allows us to pound them hard without suffering from public backlash...

"To wield onself -- to use oneself as a tool in one's own hand -- and so to make or break that which no one else can build or ruin -- THAT is the greatest pleasure known to man! To one who has felt the chisel in his hand and set free the angel prisoned in the marble block, or to one who has felt sword in hand and set homeless the soul that a moment before lived in the body of his mortal enemy -- to those both come alike the taste of that rare food spread only for demons or for gods." -- Gordon R. umm, having just seen the film V for Vendetta i have serious doubts about how true this alert really is and even if it was real i'm deeply suspicious about how it is used as propaganda :(

even BBC Radio 4 News (who are given quite abit of respect for not following government lines) openly asked an MP to comment on why people no longer believe the officials - specially after the "accidental" killing on the underground and the bungled raid when a man was shot but nothing terrorist was found (they are prosecuting him for paedophilic pornography they "found" on his computer).

the sad thing for me is that if the people lose confidence in their government and its officials' sincerity, this can only end in tears - another "incident" (real or orchestrated) where innocent civilians are killed and injured.

we are truly in the hands of thieves and fools :(

excellent insight, JT, that hadn't occurred to me. The timing of this "gel bomber" alert (my attempt to name this incident) makes one wonder as nothing actually happened, and it appears they caught these people before anything happened. So the logical question is: why the dog and pony show and why NOW?

It's a pretty good sample of the level of fighting with an Iranian ground war, for their training and the determination of Hizzbollah.

The $250M war games a few years ago had to be repeatedly rigged in order for the US Navy to win battle scenarios.

Cyni, I’m not aware of any dictate that would allow the HSA to seize control of the nations PDs, but I’m not sure such legality is necessary. Today, local PDs are so intertwined with central government that I’m sure any police commissioner would willingly cede their authority to a Chertoff goon upon request.

I was a sophmore, returning from lunch at a local mom & pop 'burger joint, with Rose, Camille, and Susan in my '50 Merc when the news broke on the rock&roll AM radio station from Dallas - forty miles away.

(If you want to see the most ridiculous example of this there is some after action reporting by the Pakistani military on their second war with India that reads like a comedy from a military doctrine standpoint. So and so displeased Allah by partaking in spirits and women and was therefore defeated etc...).

I've got to find that after action report! That sounds hysterical.

I think that you're correct on the weeding out process that has gone on. Over the past 15 years, there have been many places that potential guerilla (I'll use that as a catch-all term) leaders could have gone to train, between the former Yugoslavia, Chechnya (1994 and 1999-and they would learn a lot more 1999-present) Afghanistan and Iraq, plus the Israeli-Lebanon thing for 20 years. In all those places the state forces have used slightly different tactics, so if a leader was in two of them for a good length of time, they would gather a tremendous wealth of knowledge of what works.

There's been Chechens captured in Afghanistan by the US, and the Chechen websites have indicated sometimes that there are Chechen forces fighting all over hell to breakfast, so I don't think that it's too fare beyond the pale to believe that the current Hezbollah leadership hasn't experienced at least a few other places. If said leader fought against the Russians they would find out what worked against brute force applied liberally, and then if they also fought us in Iraq, they'd find out what works against technology and brute force applied liberally.

I've read most about Chechnya, and the tactics by the insurgency against us in Iraq (though Chechens are never insurgents or terrorists and Iraqis are never freedom fighters according to our official and press releases) and the Chechens have always been tenacious, creative and innovative in the way they do their operations. An interesting thing is that it appears that their operations performed a weeding out of sorts in the Russian Army, which has caused it to get more effective and seemingly to learn some lessons on what works and what doesn't, which is why Chechnya is a much more calm place than Iraq is right now. If Hezbollah has some leaders like Basayev in Lebanon, they would be a formidable force to deal with.

I'm also curious to know if the IDF has become a technology dependent force like we have, where initiative and creative thinking are strongly disuaded. I think that this is not the same IDF of a generation ago. Not actually engaging in actions such as they are created a mystique of invincibility that is now gone (so is ours). Their initial dependence on airpower alone (paging Gen Douhet yet again) which hasn't really been effective as a war stopper even though it's been tried nearly every conflict since 1920 (sure, the Luftwaffe can destroy the British at Dunkirk on their own) seems to indicate that they bought into the defense contractor's sales pitches about the effectiveness of the weapons they were buying.

And, the post-Caesarean incision will look fine before you know it.

Once it heals then if you open vitamin E gel caps and rub the stuff on it, the incision will all but disappear over time. In fact, the external scar can be "disappeared" before the internal scar tissue is completely healed.

(You'll get ghost pains there for possibly two years, so don't let unexpected pains alarm you. It's only scar tissue talking to you.)

And, besides, we experienced daddies like to kiss those mommy scars!

After all, if it wasn't for mommies how could we daddies reproduce?

That's a tough one, for me.

Almost every organization, entity, and individual in the world now uses the web for whatever their situation calls for doing...for example: we're chatting here, I've checked some bank accounts, the price of gold and silver, the weather up in Iowa, ordered some books and tapes to give away, and on and on.

Islamic terrorism spreads via Internet

Jerusalem Post; 9/30/2005; JUDY SIEGEL and TALYA HALKIN

Jerusalem Post

09-30-2005

Headline: Islamic terrorism spreads via Internet
Byline: JUDY SIEGEL and TALYA HALKIN
Edition; Daily
Section: News
Page: 06

Friday, September 30, 2005 -- Islamic terrorism is being promoted by a phenomenal growth in jihadist Web sites, which have grown from fewer than 20 five years ago to more than 4,000 today, according to French and US researchers writing correspondence published in the September 29 issue of the prestigious journal Nature.

Dr. Scott Atran of the Jean Nicod Institute in France and the University of Michigan and Dr. Jessica Stern of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University concluded that, due to the increasing role played by the Internet in the spread of terrorism, efforts should foster alternative peer groups in cities and cyberspace showing the same commitment and compassion towards their own members as terror groups seem to offer, but in life- enhancing ways.

"It is fair to say global Islamic jihad wouldn't exist without the Internet," said Yael Shahar, a researcher who specializes in the study of cyber-terrorism at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya. "Today, the structure of the Web is the structure of terrorist organizations. Without it, they would be reduced to local cells."

Al-Qaida, Shahar said in an interview with The Jerusalem Post, set the model for Web-based terrorist organizations that have no specific geographical location and for whom cyberspace has essentially replaced the need for state sponsorship, state-based espionage agencies and other forms of support. The Internet, according to Shahar, allows terrorist organizations to function like major corporations who do business in the global village online using workers from different countries and which grow by mergers.

"Suppose you are a small organization in Turkey concerned with regional jihad," Shahar said. "Along comes al-Qaida, and says 'We know you're not doing so well, but we'll help you build bombs and send you a suicide bomber or two if you sign on to global jihad.'"

Shahar said that the use of the Internet for global terror unfolds in four fundamental ways. Cyberspace is a platform for propaganda and incitement aimed both at the enemy and at existing and potential supporters. Often, on- line propaganda may send a double message - one directed at the Western world and a second, more violent message, written in Arabic. It exploits the vulnerability of the democratic communications revolution. "Beheading videos [are] not aimed at people in totalitarian regimes who can't do anything about it," she said, explaining they are aimed at a democracy where enough of those videos may cause people to ask why their soldiers are fighting a war.

In addition, the Internet is a source of recruiting potential jihadists in both closed and open Internet forums. Command and control to carry out attacks, coordinate cells, send user manuals, and select targets is also done via the Web along with more administrative functions such as fundraising. "At the forefront of global jihad are technologically savvy, Western-educated terrorists," Shahar said.

"The problem is that counterterrorism agencies and jihadists are not on the same wavelength. We need to be using the same means as the terrorists, with the same kind of freedom, and that is not going to happen very soon," Shahar said, because counterterrorism agencies are still hierarchical, and are not exchanging information in real time for political, economic, and technological reasons. In addition, there is a strong resistance to change and various structural problems.

"We're already in the middle of a Third World War, in which the Internet is the means used by both sides to get their messages across," Shahar said. "Unfortunately, the West isn't doing so well."

Like Atran and Stern, Shahar advocates the creation of a network of researchers that will use their its methods to recruit supporters of counterterrorism.

"We need to find out what works for them and use it against them," Shahar said.

"It is fair to say global Islamic jihad wouldn't exist without the Internet," said Yael Shahar

Right, global Islamic jihad did not exist in Saladin's day and age.

Yael, get a clue, read a little history, the Imams called for holy jihad then, and they do now, when there is a reason. Actually, there hasn't been a true call for Holy Jihad in a long time. Believe me Yael, you really don't want them to.

http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/012484.php

Also of note is that August 22 of this year corresponds with the Islamic date of Rajab 28, the day Saladin conquered and entered Jerusalem.

Taken in conjunction with Ahmadinejad’s stated desire to see Israel destroyed, it hardly seems a coincidence.

His resignation came as ministers furious at Mr Blair's handling of the crisis said they would push for an emergency recall of parliament in a manoeuvre they hoped would trigger the Prime Minister's downfall.

More than 150 MPs have urged Jack Straw, the Commons leader, to ask the Speaker to summon politicians back from their 76-day break as diplomatic calls at the United Nations stalled and Israel stepped up its offensive in Lebanon.

A senior ministerial source said ministers outraged at the Prime Minister's reticence to call for a ceasefire were backing the recall, which was likely to come in the first week of September. "The mood in the party and among the ministers is that this could cost Blair his job."

Actually, I said that from years of working at Kennedy.

Many of us working for the government back many years ago had an excellent opinion of Icelandic. Excellent maintenance, good service and not attuned to herd mentality of a cattle drive.

Last I knew they still were flying humans, not cattle. Tell Mom and Dad they made an excellent choice, for MANY reasons.

Hint, never fly Iberia, Alitalia and such. Never.

"To wield onself -- to use oneself as a tool in one's own hand -- and so to make or break that which no one else can build or ruin -- THAT is the greatest pleasure known to man! No, but I did see that there was a shakeup of the top commanders with Halutz handing his contol of the Lebanon operation at the Northern Command to Deputy Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky of the elite Golani Brigade.

I do not find this surprising at all since it is now a factual repsresentation that the Zionists have been planning an assault on Lebanon for some time. Especially considering the withdrawal of Syrian forces after the assassination of Hariri last year.

It looks as if Olmert has committed the same sins as many other civilian leaderships (think Johnson & McNamara and now Bush, Cheney & Rummy) in other military fiascos and not allowing the military to do the job they know how to do. We could add to that list Truman when he fired MacArthur.

These wars were never intended to be won, merely to grind down the military. It is worse now than ever before with the neocon and Zionist influences at their highest points ever with Bush taking office in 2001.

LOL And neither could the facist regime of the Zionists afford to show such weakness as Olmert has by changing the plan which was set. This explains the neocon's shrillness with the poor results of the IDF attacks. It's been the same old BS with them behaving like mad dogs with a blood lust for more killing.

I would say that if there is a terror attack of any size, it might just go off in Tel Aviv instead of some place else. The fact that this could appear as a coup d'etat instead of a WMD strike is within the realm of possibilities. Vaccilllation by the leader is an unpardonable sin (even for Dubya) in the eyes of the perps of 9-11. The war must continue and expand at all costs. This is why Bush had given the green light to expand the conflict to Syria in an effort to draw in Iran. He knows who not to cross or he might end up like JFK. Remember also that Olmert was small potatoes until Sharon tapped him for the number two spot. He is expendable just as so many others.

I've been saying for some time that the only way there would be another big attack on U.S. soil is if Bush wavers and starts to make peace initiatives. It looks like it is Olmert who has screwed up instead and now will be forced into a position which will literally put the Israelis back to square one and the plan to expand the war to Syria and Iran on indefinite hold.

Bush held out longer than he should have to give the IDF a chance to overcome its poor strategic position and now will have to try to achieve a diplomatic (Only Bolton could ram thru something which would enrage the Lebanese and the rest of the Arabs; Condi is a non-factor.) resolution that will still give the Zionists a few crumbs. But that will lead to further political instability in the years to come.

Thanks for the tip. This clears up quite a few things.

Hi dee - I guess I just lost track of what was going on - actually I've heard that the terror nonsense was generated by Blair's political problems in the UK - that's why it happened over there. The Lieberman thing probably played a part as well. Obviously there was no immediate threat (on that day) so they did obviously time it for a purpose. I just wish people wouldn't be taken in by this nonsense. Personally I don't know when I'm ever going to fly again - it's becoming far too inconvenient, and who the hell knows if you're gonna get blown up or shot with a missile. Not worth it.

I'm with you re flying............but have been that way for a loooonnnnnng time.

It's been a few years now since my quite elderly dad flew back to the midwest for family visits. I think 2000 was his last one back. And, of course, 911 would have finished it off--September was always when he went back.

Anyhow, it's a 3-1/2 hour trip to the airport from here. And to think they want passengers there 2 hours ahead--presumably to just sit around or stand around til flight time--really put a kibosh to it. Topping that, of course, was that, while I could drop him off in the unloading zone, he would have to stand there until I could circle around the damned parking area, to where you could short term park, and then walk about 1/2 mile back to the unloading zone.

It's one thing to be a 30 year old man or woman and do this.........it's something else to expect a 90 year old, who needs a walker, to do this.

I never cared for flying myself....my husband always thought it was great. He even liked helicopters. I was always as nervous as a whore in church when I flew. Guess that goes back to the 1950s when my grandmother, bless her heart, missed her flight...........it crashed over/around the Grand Canyon.

I almost crashed once - we lost one engine and the other was going out. we emergency landed at Dover Airforce base. Funny thing is - I KNEW that the engine was going to go out. I just had that feeling, and sure enough.

I don't expect to be flying anywhere for many many years. I just won't put up with it. There's nothing I want to see that bad. This security stuff is nonsense.

You know, for all the raving they've been doing over the past week about terror plots to mix various ordinary household liquids into bombs aboard planes, I have yet to see anyone who can actually tell me if it's actually POSSIBLE to do this stuff. Make bombs out of peroxide and nail polish remover and igniting them with MP3 players? This all sounds crazy to me. Of course we can see that the timing was rigged, but I have to question the basic premise. Is there anyone here with sufficient chemical knowledge to say whether this stuff is even possible?

Sounds like a bunch of horseshit to me. I guess if you try to look it up on the web though, they can make out you're some kind of terrorist for trying to look up "recipes"...

Between the eventual rising price of gasoline (Alaska/Iran or just plain greed), and the misery of waiting for hours in an airport (just to have all your cosmetics thrown into a bin for someone else to sell), they are either telling us to stay home or ride trains/ships/horses. I'll probably stay home too.

I guess George "the Worst President Ever" Bush is trying to revive some old American traditions....like covered wagons.

Seriously I wish we could get some non-govt chemical expert talking about this stuff. I don't doubt that some compounds could be dangerous or even explosive, but I'm wondering how practical it is to mix little bottles on a plane (even in that wee john) and get a sufficient reaction to blow up the plane? How much chemicals are we talking? An explosion might cause some minor damange, but I don't see taking down the whole plane unless you get into the cock pit.

I think this is the case of taking a small bit of truth and stretching it like stretch pants on a 400 lb woman. The coverage is thin and reality keeps sticking out.

I'm with ya, mehitable.

I forgot to mention the grope and paw bullshit that I refuse to be a party to at the airports.

And the last time my Dad flew, there was the usual 'no unticketed people' beyond this line--meaning you couldn't go all the way to the gate to see your loved one/whomever off.

Well, my Dad uses a wheelchair once we get inside a terminal (otherwise, we'd be late for everything :)) The past times I've taken him to the airport, there was airport personnel who would take the wheelchair up thru the elevator system to the second level and see that he got on the plane.

The last time, however, while they indicated someone would take him up, in no time they said I could take him up. So I did.............and once at the second level, we went over and sat down. Before the flight started loading, I went to the person behind the gate and told them my father would need to be loaded early or late, etc. I was questioned as to why I was there. And then in no time, someone else came up and said that I could stay with him and actually push his wheelchair right up to the loading ramp walkway.

Who the hell can deal with this 'now you can" or 'now you can't" bullshit!

And what is so stupid about this is that the whole county where the airport is couldn't have had more than 100,000 people...one of the biggest in Montana!

Really, really stupid.

There are so many things to be seen within a short driving span. I know when I lived in California, I used to take a map and mark all the places I'd love to see......geeze, just the old Missions could take a year or so.

I've never even had the desire to go to Hawaii or Alaska either. Most of the eastern seaboard states don't interest me (hint, hint NY!)

I have a cousin in California who has spent the past 5 - 6 years (since they got married) on the road. They have a fantastic motor coach and pull a Jeep behind them. All they've done is gone state to state to state. They stop and stay as long as they want, and then go on.

This is their last year of this lifestyle as they are in the process of building a home now. They're not getting rid of the rigs, though, because they still want to travel. It appears Hawaii is out because they can't drive there! LOL.....

We started to do that several years ago. A lot of fun.

At San Juan Bautista, a lovely spot, we learned that the Padres used mustard seed to "mark" El Camino Real. Cool idea, no?

Lucky cousin. Camping along the way would make these fun outings more affordable. My aunt/uncle enjoyed the state park system while they were able.

Cousin and hubby came up here last year.

Seems like they check in at the old homestead physically once a year--get their physicals, blah blah blah, and then head right back out. With cell phones, internet access, banking online and bill paying, a friend to check their mail, they quickly head out for something like a 2 week stay along the Colorado.

Been doing it long enough, they have developed sets of friends who do this same sort of thing. From the way she talked, it is a real hoot. And being able to stay as long as you want in an area in order to really see it and get a feel for the area and the people really adds to it.

Like I said, their motor coach is like home....washer and dryer to boot! And they have a dalmation dog traveling with them.

She said they prefer to stay at area grounds rather than at family homesteads...that way they can visit and also 'see' the area like they want to, without imposing or worrying about being nuisances.

This was really comfortable for me, too, because it had been many, many, many years (like about 40+/-)since I last saw her.

I woulda been content to have lived that way back after the girls got out of school. Gene and I had loved traveling and had always wanted to travel at that time. But then, with the ranch and livestock, and him having to go on dialysis, lifes' desires changed....

Re the Missions..........that was interesting about the mustard seeds.

I used to live several miles from the mission at San Fernando--drove past it lots of times, but never stopped and viewed it. That was during my growing up years, and I guess the parents never thought it important.

However, I was a voracious reader back then and read just about everything I could about the Missions. I'd still love to be able to follow El Camino Real from the mexican border to Frisco........however, it would probably have to be done using a chopper because I couldn't stand to be around all the zillions of people all over so-cal now. Crowds really bother, and that traffic! Forget about it.

Always blew me away to read about all the leather hides, like from Mission San Gabriel, that were loaded on shipped to be taken away for tanning.
